Is there a budget Sulphate-free shampoo?

Check out Tres Emme natural Essence - I know the conditioner is silicone free. I only wash with conditioner so it doesn;t dry out my hair...

L'Oreal makes the EverStrong, but check reviews on Makeupalley.com. This stuff made my scalp burn and itch.

Trader Joes sells a sulfate free shampoo that works great- costs 2.99 for a large bottle- my fam uses it all the time- I use an expensive Paul Mitchell sulfate free thickening shampoo (probably too many years on the reg. shampoos:sad2:)
which costs 21.00 a tube, but I use it sparingly.....:scared1: we also use TJ's conditioner that goes with their shampoo-
I tried the Loreal sulfate free formula, but it was too greasy

Thank you everyone for your replies!! The trader Joe's one is alot cheaper than something I saw at Walmart which was about $5. I have to find a TJ in my area and check out the prices of the other ones you all have mentioned.

I usually don't shampoo(I use Wen)

Have you been able to find a cheaper way to get Wen? I've heard excellent reviews on it, but it's so pricey. And do you use ALL the products they say they send in a month?

I have hypothyroidism and it killed my hair. I used to have thick, straight hair, and now it's dry, brittle, wavy and frizzy. :sad1:

I usually use a dandruff shampoo, Head & Shoulders, and that is all sodium lauryl sulfate. I need to use it less & something that is more nourishing in between.

First, you probably don't have dandruff---just a really dry scalp, which the dandruff shampoo may be making worse.

I have never used Wen, but I had my thyroid removed due to cancer last year. I have found since then, that I don't need to wash my hair every day. Like you I have had a lot of hair loss, but I was told to expect it. I used to have hair so thick I could barely use a pony-tail holder. Now I can go around 3-4 times. My hair still looks healthy, it is just so much thinner. Honestly, my hair was so thick before I had never seen my scalp. :rotfl:

To keep the flakes to a minimum, I just wash it every other day. Also I drink an obscene amount of water. I found that not only was my scalp dry, but so was all of my skin. This has helped tremendously.

Talked to the endocrine about all of this, and she said it is to be expected. She had some ideas to treat the "symptoms", but basically said stay hydrated, lots of lotion, and use condition on your scalp. I told her I stopped shampooing daily, and she told me to let her know how it went--so she could pass on the tip to others if it worked. Since she has a functioning thyroid she can't really experiment on herself.

OVC had where you could buy 5 0r6 bottles for $80. It was a mixed selection of scents. I bought it but haven't tried it yet.

I use the sulphate free type from Abba, it is at ULTA. Normally it is pretty expensive $40 a liter, but they put it on sale 3 or 4 times a year for about $14 a liter. I really like it, I used wen for a while but my hair looked dirty after continued use, so I had to switch and I am so glad I did, after 10 months it still looks great and the conditioner is the best I have ever found.

I like the Whole Foods brand shampoo and conditioner and it is not very expensive at all. I used to use the conditioner only to do a Wen-style no-poo wash. I've been trying Nioxin's line of products (specifically the scalp recovery line). I like it and noticed some hair thickening (I also am hypothyroid). I'm going to give it another month before I decide. I'm not sure if the Nioxin is sulfate-free. But I know some people were discussing thinning hair, too.

Whole Foods brand shampoos and conditioners are sulphate-free and are about $2.99 a bottle.

we tried the whole foods version of the cheaper sulfate free shampoo...my entire family boycotted them......:rolleyes1 seriously we had to use the rest of that BIG bottle washing the pets all summer...

Waaaa!   I just grabbed my hair back into a pony tail, and your right, there is about half as much as used to be there! :sad1: Lately, when I've been putting an elastic around it, I have been wrapping 3-4 times. I thought it was because I had gotten cheapo elastics from the dollar store and the elastic is stretching out. No, there is just less hair back there. I, too, used to have a problem pulling the elastic around it a second time. :sad1:

I suspect you are right about not being hydrated enough. My scalp is WHITE. I mean WHITE. And it's flaky even right after washing. I sometimes think I should get that dark scalp powder that Joan Rivers advertises on an infomercial to darken the scalp line where I part my hair. But, with an already flaky scalp, that would just be a disaster. :scared1:

I use White Sands Shampoo & Conditioner. Really expensive at the salon. Great on color treated hair. No sulfates. Keeps color looking fresh. Find it on eBay. The last time I purchased I was able to get 2 bottles of shampoo & 2 bottles of conditioner for less than $20-with free shipping. Good luck!
