I really want to try this, but I am not a banana fan, is it overpowering or sweet? It sounds totally yummy and I really want to try Kona Cafe!!

YES - It is both overpowereing and sweet!! After reading countless recommendations about Tonga Toast- I finally had it in April- and I won't ever bother again. It was so sweet that to use syrup would have been over the top- unfortunately, I don't like my french toast dry, and without syrup it was also too dry. It's basically 1/4 of a loaf of bread with a split in it that is filled with gooey sweet banana mixture - then very, very lightly breaded and fried, then dipped in cinnamon-sugar. But....I'm definitely in the minority here!! Jill

After reading about so many people raving about it, I gave it a try on my last trip. I wouldn't say it was overpowering in the banana department, but DEFINITELY in the sweet department. It's pretty big and rolled in cinnamon & sugar. I got through maybe half of mine and that was it. I would not really rave about it, nor would I probably go running back there anytime soon for it (or dinner -- had dinner there and it was one of the worst (next to Chef Mickey's) meals I had).

I got the recipie when we were there last year and it is French Toast stuffed with bananas. It is sour dough bread stuffed with bananas. Soaked in the egg mixture, deep fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. I don't think you would like it if you don't like bananas. I really liked it but I like something sweet for breakfast.

Don't eat it unless you have a major league sweet tooth. You can definitely taste the bananas too. I think it is good, had it twice, but it is heavy and sweet. I think I got a stomachache afterwards but Oh well it was worth it.

When you order it you can also have it stuffed with strawberries instead of bananas.

What my DH and I do is order one order of Tonga Toast and the fruit plate. That way, we are not getting a sugar shock from the TT and the fruit balances it out.

We like it very much...in fact I have made it at home several times! You have to try it at least once!!!!!

Hope this helps!

I agree sharing it is probably a good idea. It is very good but was not as good this year as the previous two years however, that may have been the nasty hostess, the way they split up our party when half of the restaurant was empty or the long time it took to get the food to the table. The server said he dropped the first tray but I am not sure if he was kidding or not. That said, I will definately go back to have it on my next trip as the it was a very positive experience on the other visits.

I have a very sweet tooth and find this TOO much, but I'm also not super crazy about bananas. Can't remember if I ever tried the strawberry, but that sounds more to my liking. For me, the best option would be to split it. A whole order is way too much. I'd enjoy 1/2 and some fresh fruit or a little bit of scrambled eggs.

I had the banana stuffed french toast at Boatwrights 3 years ago. I am not sure if it's exactly the same (different name but does sound similar... from what I can remember) and what I had was extremely sweet... and I LOVE sweets. I couldn't eat it. I had maybe two or three bites and that was it. Try it for yourself though and make you own opinion.... at least you won't be wondering "should I have tried it" :p

We love it but I do like to split an order. It is huge and rich. We never, ever put syrup on it.

where people actually admit that the Tonga Toast is way too sweet. After hearing all the raves, I tried the TT during our last trip. It sincerely tasted like you just ate a spoonful of sugar. Needless to say, I took about two bites and then ended up eating breakfast on the go when we got to a park!

You can order the Tonga Toast grilled instead of fried. I find that the fried version is too greasy for me and always order it grilled. Another upside to this is that less of the cinammon sugar sticks to the grilled version and it is, therefore, less sweet...just right IMO.

I was also lured by all the accolades of the infamous banana stuffed "Tonga Toast" and anticipated this meal for 8 months. We finally checked into the Poly in Jan '91 and headed over to the Coral Isle Cafe. I couldn't believe it after that first bite, it was HORRIBLE.

Somebody must like it though, after being removed from the menu a while ago it has returned. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't........
