Is the sci-fi scary?

I don't think so. But is he afraid of the dark? It is somewhat dark in there...it has to be to watch the movies...but you can still see...I mean the waiters have to be able to see to bring your food! It isn't scarey at all, IMO. DS was 1 and DN was 5 last time we were there and they both enjoyed it. They loved being in the cars. I would say it would be okay.

My DS, 7, was terrified -- he HATED the film clips, he found them very, very disturbing, he still hasn't forgiven us (we went in December) and he's made us promise never, never to take him there again. I think there's an age group where kids are old enough to focus on the screen and be very upset by what they are seeing -- it appears that some younger kids, who don't really look at or think about what's up there don't mind it, and certainly once kids are a little older they can see/appreciate the humor, but there is an age group (and I hate to try to guess it completely, only have to say that at 7 my son is in it!) that does NOT enjoy this restaurant.

We found it very dark - so dark that it was hard to see your food. DS was 3 and he didn't really pay attention to the movies that much.

Most of the clips are from the 50s & 60s and involve aliens and/or mutations of people. A good portion are silly, and poorly made, but there are a few that are creepy (one guy looks a little melted). DS11, who now loves Sci-Fi, was a little leery first time we went (he was six).

I didn't think that the clips were particularly scarry but as others have said its dark. Two of the children with us a one trip were really reluctant to enter. Once they were inside and got seated in the cars they were okay.

All of our kids loved it, even our very shy 3 year old daughter! It is a bit dim in there, but nothing scary and the movies are old movie clips that I didn't feel were scary at all. Our 7 yr old and even 16 month old were fine also. I guess it would depend on the child, but we eat there every time and really enjoy it.

Isn't there one clip involving a big medical needle that someone plunges into someone? Or am I just having a nightmare? It seems the CMs all screamed when that happened, kinda creepy.

My 4 year old hesitated going in, but the cars themselves were VERY well lit inside last time we were there. A good test to see how they will do with the movies might be to rent an MST3K disk with one of the old B&W "horror" films (something like "Attack of the Giant Gila Monster" would be good and is one the clips they actually show if I remember right) and just leave it playing on the TV one afternoon at home. if it doesn't phase him to have it on then he should be fine in the restaurant.

:teeth: I don't think so. I'm 22 and can do Sci-Fi with no problem. But I still have yet to keep my eyes open for all of the Haunted Mansion. :teeth: What can I say? I'm a big wuss! But Sci-Fi I can handle. :)

Its not scary, I am not a fan of sci-fi at all but I have a SIL who will not skip it when she comes down for her Disney fix.
I dont think the movies they show are going to keep a 4 year old entertained.

Our 9-year-old was very scared by the movie clips and had nightmares the night after we took him there. We won't go back. Adults find the clips silly and funny. It's harder to tell how children will react.

I'm so glad my kids aren't afraid of everything. Sure, somet things scare them, but they loved the Sci Fi diner. They are 3 and 7 year old girls.

Our kids first ate at Sci-Fi at the ages of 3 and 5. THEY LOVE IT!!! When we plan for our trips, it is the first place they ask to eat. We always have a great time there and it is the kids' favorite.

We've eaten at Sci fi when DD was 5,6, and 7. At 5, she barely noticed the movies. At 6 and 7, she LOVED them and at 7 and now 8, she BEGS to watch those cheesy B-grade monster movies and laughs right through them. It all depends on the child. The idea of trying an MST3K video at home in the background first sounds like a good one.
