Soft openings by definition are unknown events. It may it may not be running at any point you walk up to it, even if they are minutes apart. No way to know if it will work out for you in advance.
I can tell you I observed riderless cars running on the track last night.
I am interested in see how the soft openings work. It boggles my mind that they won't have the 7DMT open for the ROCK YOUR DISNEY SIDE 24-hour event on the 23rd....16 days until my trip and we have 3 MK days planned, so hopefully we'll get to hop on one of those days...

The best theory I've heard is that is not opening until after the 24-hour event BECAUSE of the 24-hour event. The ride is brand new and has not been stressed over a normal 14- to 16-hour day. How smart is it to "go for it" for 24 hours straight with this thing. How would the press react if it dies during it? Disney would not want that.
Since the press event they've had some cast members riding, but no guests.
There is some speculation based on a report that cast members working the ride will be fully trained as of 5/11 that soft openings will commence after that, but it's just speculation right now.
Friday afternoon, there were some people riding. They were in plain clothes, so there was no way to know if they were CMs, members of the press, or guests. There were 4 CMs "guarding" the entrance, which was closed. I'm not sure what it was all about, but clearly it was a very small, select group of individuals who got to ride it at that time.
I don't know if anyone is on/uses Vine, but users JoshDarnit with his children (who also have vine accounts- the cutest being Evancredible) have vines riding the Mine Train, and their process of getting special access to the ride. I think there's a date on one of the vines but I can't remember it off the too of my head. It may have been Friday.

I follow both of them and I did see they received Media passes to attend and ride. They made multiple vines leading up to the ride, the. One actually on the ride. I'm sure someone at Disney saw how many followers they have, see it's a nice family with a cute kid, and told them "we'll fly you down, your family films some vines looking happy as can be, and provide us with some good media"

FWIW, on Friday morning shortly after they made the big announcement about the May 28th opening, I was over in line waiting to meet Aladdin and Jasmine and a CM Manager was around and told everyone in line and the CMs there about the Mine Train opening and she was very giddy about it. She also said "If you'll be at our 24 hour event, you'll have a chance to ride it then." Of course, you can take that with a grain of salt, but that is what was said to a group of us waiting in the line.
We were at MK today and stalked the ride 4 different times and only saw it run around 10am. They were filming a family walking through the line and the mine train was running in the background. There was no one on the ride.
We were there today and saw a couple of folks riding. I was all excited and went up and asked if they were doing a soft opening and was told no. I was thinking it must just be a few cast members then that were riding?
