And why do keep wallowing in all the gossip about the presidential candidates in particular, and all candidates in general?
I believe a lot of it has to do with the multitude of media outlets and the competition between them. It seems like they are forcing each other to report on more than just the issues in order to generate more sensational headlines.
These days everyone can find an outlet that leans toward their political persausion, and most of us seem very willing to accept most of what our favorites report and dismiss anything reported by the other guy's network/newspaper/website.
It seems like this has really contributed to the polarization of the American people. Instead of "attacking" positions, we're attacking candidates personally. And then the people that support those candidates take it personally and feel obligated to respond, and away we go!
