Is Telluride on a budget an oxymoron?

Just found out that we will have a wedding to attend in Telluride next Sept. We are a family of five so we will be driving as airfare to Montrose would require a second mortgage, and since we are driving all that way, 18+ hours, we might as well make it our vacation. Any tips, ideas, etc.?

We went this summer and stayed right outside Telluride at the Blue Jay Lodge in Placerville and it was really nice and not nearly as expensive as staying in Telluride, it also has a reasonable restaurant. There is a free gondola system that goes up and down throughout the Telluride area also. Eating can be expensive in a lot of places in Telluride, especially in Ski Village. Have fun, it's beautiful!

I've got a 14hr car ride to look forward to in a couple weeks. My aunt wants to drive straight through to save on lodging on the road, and get the most time out of her vacation time.

Have you thought about flying to Denver and then renting a car and driving to Telluride? Just a thought...that would save you miles of boring Kansas and Eastern Colorado. ;)

You should check out the Durango Silverton train. It is a old steam train that goes between Durango and Silverton and passes through some gorgeous scenery! You can ride round trip on the train or one way with a bus ride back.

We are not a skiing family. We have a timeshare in Mexico that can be traded to use in Telluride. I did book my timeshare to go to Mexico in March but with recent news (again) about tourists being the targets of violent crimes, I'm less than thrilled with going there. I have thought about switching my dates and go to Telluride in the summer. I'm wondering what there is to do in the summer with a husband and 4 year old?

Hey there, Jedi. Those of us in "boring" Kansas might take offense! Actually I'm pretty far into Eastern KS (the hilly, wooded part). Central/Western Kansas is pretty dull. And Eastern CO just might be the worst part!

Another possibility would be to rent an RV, take a slower trip, stay in RV parks (make reservations before you leave) and make the trip as important as the destination. 16 hours in a car will leave you with the Carpool Crouch and a headache. Besides, you can cook for yourself in an RV, and really save on restaurants.

Sorry about that! I'm born and raised in Missouri and just moved to Denver from Kansas City (Go Chiefs!). I've made the drive from Missouri to Colorado (and now the opposite way!) too many times to count. Counting oil wells has lost its charm. ;)
