Is SSR going to be too large/overcrowded?

I do not undersatnd the people who posted about there not being enough activites at SSR?
Not to be rude -but did you look across the lake??
I could see a lot of Parents droping thier kids (when they are old enough) at Disney Quest and going to the Spa or playing Golf.
I think this resort is being built for people who enjoy other things besides a pool not that there seems to be any shortage of pool space considering number of pools

I'm sad to say.......maybe DVC is growing too fast.........maybe they need to slow down and look at the resort, and not just look at profits!

Every resort is DIFFERENT. One could easily raise questions like:

* Why isn't OKW's workout facility as good as SSR?

* Why doesn't VWL have a Community Hall?

* Why was BCV built inches away from the traffic and noise of a main road?

* Why doesn't BWV have a basketball court?

* Why does BWV only have two quiet pools?

* Why aren't any of the other resorts attached to a golf course clubhouse?

* Why don't the other resorts offer spa services on par with SSR?

Just because the lastest-and-greatest resort doesn't have the best of everything doesn't mean that corners are being cut.

ITA. Perhaps for some, "going to the hotel pool on vacation" is a big part of the trip; for DW and I - who have a tropical pool w/waterfall & a hot tub available year round (apt complex, folks; we ain't rich), the quiet pool - combined with a trip to a "real" water park now and then - meets our outdoor water needs. To be honest, I'll bet that we'll be using our in-room jacuzzi more than the SSR pools on most trips....

ITA with Dr.Tomorrow. Sometimes posters here make it sound like prior to SSR, DVC was an elite organization for a select few that is now heading to hell in a handbasket because Disney has decided to open such a large resort. It's the Disney Vacation Club and it's their decision. Get over it, people- Disney is going to sell off shares in 800+ units and add thousands of new members to the rolls. If you do not like SSR, then please don't stay there- but don't complain if you want to make a last minute ressie and it's the only place available. Disney is selling "buy here, stay where you want". If you read other threads, you'll note that this is happening: New members are asking about the logistics for switching at seven months and/or crowing about getting in at BCV, BWV, and VWL, almost like it's a complete impossiblity to do so.

Getting back to the OP's question: Do I think the resort will be too big and the theme pool will be overcrowded? My opinion is yes, the theme pool will be overcrowded and I'm not especially thrilled about the proposed number of units. I thought 500 or so was reasonable, manageable, and desirable. I don't particularly want to stay in the "Paddock" area when it is available. And I thought it was hilarious that a previous poster referred to it as the "Resort that MBA's built". But that's not my call. Disney is the expert here, so I'm sure they'll do the right thing when it comes to keeping all their guests happy- even the so-called "masses" at SSR. Saratoga Springs is a beautiful resort, a relaxing place to stay, and despite its size, I'm still proud to call it one of my homes.

I was referring to the fact I feel that Disney, by building such a large facility without the proper amount of pools, shopping, food, and general facilities for an 800 unit property has lowered their standards, thus treating us like "the masses"; a group of people who don't know the difference.

I think people, some rich, and some poor, can all afford to buy into DVC, either by a direct purchase, or some loan. That's the beauty of it.

All of us, with all our backgrounds, rich, poor, whatever.....have one incredible thing in common.

WE LOVE OUR HOME! DVC!!!

I hope they realize what they have here when they finish each DVC property! What they have in US!

It's not just a rental, an investment, or a vacation.

By buying into DVC it becomes our lives!!!

I guess I look at the situation like this...I go to SSR because that's my home resort and I really like it there. I didn't buy DVC for the theme pool, but I understand it is very important to some people. In my case, the quiet pools are more important as that is where I will spend the majority of my pool time.
The only improvement I would like to see at SSR is in the food offerings. I am less than impressed with AP and wish there was more to chose from.

Thanks for the clarification re: DVC for the masses. It goes hand-in-hand with that "Resort that MBA's built" remark. I just tend to get irked and defensive when I read some of the remarks about the resort. It's one thing not to like the actual place; another to bash what it represents, especially when members have invested so much in their contracts there.

I do think that once the resort is more built-out, the food service will be supplemented to compliment Artist's Palette, but not to compete too much with DTD's establishments. I don't think there will be another themed pool; just additional quiet pools. And I worry about bus service once there are more folks staying at the resort and more non-guests get the idea to hop on over to DTD via SSR.

And from all accounts, people absolutely love SSR.

We were at SSR 2 weeks ago and never saw one instance of someone using our buses to get to the parks while parking at DTD. Not saying it doesn't happen....we just didn't see anyone doing that!

What does MBA built mean?

Point the First: Since most (all) WDW addmission media include use of WDW Transportation, they simply cannot begin to refuse bus use to non-resort guests.

Point the Second. Yes, it has been getting some positive reviews, as people actually start staying there?

Point the Third: MBA => Masters in Business Administration. The phrase suggests that SSR was designed by business types as opposed to Imagineers. I respectfully disagree...

When the "Resort that MBA's Built" comment that was made, the poster was also speaking of the idea to maximize profit by building a large resort on one site with perhaps fewer amenities than offered by the smaller DVC's. I just thought it was humorous because of how I felt when the additional phase was announced. As I remarked previously, I'm not thrilled with such a big resort, but it's not my call. I still love SSR, and can't wait to be back in September for a week with not only my parents (who adore the resort also), but with my sister and her husband, and some of our other family visiting for a day. I'm excited to see their reactions when they see it for the first time.

Overcrowded, no, too large, yes.

I'm one who thinks SSR is too large, but not in the sense of actually staying there.

For me I wish DVC was building three resorts of 300 rooms instead of 1 resort with 850 rooms. This would give every DVC member three additional places to stay or try out each vacation, as opposed to just one.

An analogy would be I like Splash Mountain, its my favorite, but I also like Haunted Mansion and Pirates. Having the choice of all three is better than the one choice of an awesome Splash. I wish they were buiding SSR at 400 rooms, 250 rooms at the Contemporary, and 125 rooms at DL's Grand Californian.

The more choices the better.
