Could Space Mountain be considered a roller coaster? What about Splash Mountain, and the railroad ride?

Just curious... not a big coaster fan, but my DD really wants to ride on these and of course if she rides I'll have to go with her.

I personally consider it a coaster. It is fast and bouncy like a coaster.

Yep, Space is a roller coaster. It's more of a "wild mouse" coaster that doesn't have the steep drops, though- more the swooping and banking around. The fact that it's dark actually helps a lot of people who don't like regular coasters, because you don't have that sensation of looking down the steep drop in front of you and screaming all the way down. It just looks like you're swooping through the stars. As far as actual thrills and drops, it's not rated very exciting by coaster fans, because it's not that intense, but the fact that it's in the dark makes it more exciting, and makes it too intense for some people. On the other hand, I've heard of some people who don't like roller coasters that actually love Space.

Splash isn't a coaster-- it's a flume ride, in water, in a "log", but it does, of course, have a few drops. Mostly it's a gentle ride through a story, where you are looking at all the scenes and singing, then there's the big drop at the end. Which, in my opinion, is not half as bad as it looks from the outside. You can get splashed a bit, or you can also get really soaked, depending on where you're sitting, and how you hit those bumps! :)

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is definitely a coaster. It's fairly wild, and it has a lot of very tight turns.

Bear in mind that this is all subjective-- real roller coaster aficionados scoff at DL's rides except possibly California Screamin', because compared to the big ones, they're not that scary or intense. But for many people, they're too much.

I like roller coasters, though I haven't been on very many and not any really scary ones. But I LOVE them all at DL! I will tell you that I have motion sickness issues with rides like gravitron, zipper, octopus-- anything that goes round and round while spinning (I barely survived the Teacups  ) But I love the rollercoaster rides! DD5 loved them, too, as did my niece who was 5, and who went on Screamin' 3 times in a row!

HTH--:goodvibes

Space Mountain is a smooth FAST but super tame roller coaster. There are lots of turns, and a few small dips but no HUGE drops.

As for Splash Mountain, it is not a roller coaster. As stated it's a log ride. Not fast, but you will get wet, and there is that one drop at the end, but really its over in less then 3 seconds. No more then that. It looks far, but really its not that bad.

Big Thunder is a roller coaster. It doesnt have huge drops either. Just some little dips and lots of turns. Although you go up big hills you dont have the big drop at the other end.

The only roller coaster you might have an issue with is Screamin'. That is FAST and a few big dips and it turns you upside down. Other then this ride though, all rides at Disneyland are meant for Families so they try and make them as kid friendly as possible. No ride at Disneyland is threatening, just adventurous and thrilling. All the little additional add on's to the ride tease your senses. That's what the hype is over each ride.

Space mountain is a roller coaster. It is all in the dark, lots of twists and turns with the sky and stars above you. It is a good ride, if you like coasters (personally, this one makes me nauseated) because you can't see where you are going. My DH and DS (14) usually ride this one without me. That being said, if I took dramamine, it probably wouldn't be too bad. I could do it once a trip if needed.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a roller coaster too. It is outside and through caverns (nice scenery) a little rough, not too bad. I would ride this one.

Splash Mountain is a water ride. You sit in a log and float through the mountain, it has a couple of up and downs inside the mountain and then of course the big drop that you see from outside. Some people are put off by the drop, I find it more smooth than a roller coaster. This is one of my favorite rides. Oh, you can get wet on this one. Sit in the back if that is an issue for you and you won't get as wet. Sometimes people in the front get totally soaked.

I'm not a fan of roller coasters, and Space Mountain did feel like a roller coaster, however, you can't see anything other than "space", so I was ok with my fear of roller coasters, since I couldn't see what was happening. However, with that being said, it was very jerky imo. I felt sick to my stomach. My 5 year old son was dying to go on this, so we did, and he actually hit his head pretty hard because he had his head leaning slightly forward and on one of the jerks, it threw his head back and he had quite a bump, we were worried about a concussion, he hit it that hard, and didn't feel very well.

So the roller coaster part wasn't so scary to me, but it was a jerky ride with so many twists and turns that I was not a fan personally! Although I think i'm in the minority in this! :)

I highly recommen Bonine each day for everyone in your party! this way you don't have to know ahead of time if people in your group get motion sickness and take a chance on ruining your day! One pill every day covers it, and they're chewable for the little ones or people who can't swallow pills!

Space Mountain and Thunder Mountain are in fact roller coasters. Personally I feel that Thunder Mountain is less intense then Space, but thats really a matter of opinion. Splash Mountain is a log ride, not so much a roller coaster.

I am not a big coaster fan, but Big Thunder Mountain is one of my all time Disney favorites. I love the theming, and it is just fast enough to have a little excitement without being scary.

It's about as tame as a coaster can be, if it was any tamer it would be somthing like Haunted Mansion! :rotfl:

We tried Dramamine last time (I was in the hotel bed, dizzy as all get out, and barely managed the words "Dramamine - Gift Shop" to my husband) but this time DH will try Bonine. Dramamine didn't work that good, IMO.

Actually, my doctor prescribed me the Scopolamine patch this time. Mostly used for people going on cruises. She said that it sounds like my motion sickness was pretty bad, and that the OTC stuff probably won't work.

The Bonine is over the counter and does not seem to cause any drowsiness either.....my DD15 always says she doesn't get car sick when we go so she doesn't want to take the pill, but I remind her she doesn't get sick BECAUSE I've always given her the pill!! lololol

I would describe it as a coaster that does not go upside down and is themed.

If it makes you feel any better, Space Mountain's top speed is a mere 29mph. The darkness and sharp turns create the illusion of high speed. It is as the warnings say, "a roller coaster-TYPE ride in the dark". Thrilling and fun, yet not completely comparable to what you would normally expect a roller coaster to be. The same goes for Thunder Mountain. Completely different theme, but basically the same idea.

and he actually hit his head pretty hard because he had his head leaning slightly forward and on one of the jerks, it threw his head back and he had quite a bump, we were worried about a concussion, he hit it that hard, and didn't feel very well.

I did this on Splash last year. I ducked coming down the big drop and banged my head on the seat in front of me. I was sitting second to last. I had a huge red circle on my forehead for hours and a killer headache. The seat is actually foam, so it didn't give me a concussion or anything, but it was pretty sturdy foam and it hurt. :headache: So I learned not to duck! Hitting your head is way worse than getting wet!

I would consider Space Mountain a mini-coaster. It is actually just a mousetrap-type ride (like at the county fair). While we were in WDW a few years ago, we happened to go on the sky ride and rode through Space Mountain while the lights were on and it was being worked on. I was shocked to discover it was a mousetrap. All my life, I've NEVER been able to keep my eyes open on Space Mountain because I thought I was going to hit my head on something (as a kid I guess I figured if I couldn't see it coming, I wouldn't get hit--or if I did get hit, it was better not to know it was coming).

I figured once I realized it was just a mousetrap I'd be able to keep my eyes open but I still can't :rotfl2: It is a fun ride though and I'm looking forward to riding it again in a few weeks.

Definitely a roller coaster. Very tame, haha, if you compare it to the ones at Magic Mountain, but worth the while because it feels so magical, i mean, it's disney we are talking about, eh? XD

I would class this as a rollercoaster, I love this ride and I'm not a big rollercoaster fan,but their's something about this ride I like.:)

Won't do Space..did Splash once but that drop was horrid (in my wimpy opinion) so won't do it again. Big Thunder I've done several times, but don't like it. Screamin NO WAY. I'm quite wimpy..
