I know alot of you have seen Slumdog Millionaire, I am dying to see it myself.

For those of you who have seen it, do you think it is OK for a 10 year old boy to see? My son really wants to see it. He told me 2 kids in his class have seen it. I looked at reviews and it says it is rated R for violence and disturbing scenes. How disturbing are the scences?

It is very sad and yes there are scenes that are very disturbing. :sad2:

Hmmm....I am thinking 10yo is too young.

It is a very good movie but a sad movie.

I would say no , but you know your kid best. Very little of the violence is shown directly, esp. the violence towards kids. BUT, there was still a lot I had a hard tome watching, because it is sad. I can give examples if you'd like, but I don't want to spoil it it too much.

It really end up being a joyful movie, but some of it is awfully sad.

I knew this was sad from the opening.....:guilty: That was all shown.

Thanks for your opinions, that was my original thought, that he was too young. But when I heard that other kids saw it, I thought I was just being an overprotective Mom! My son is a quarter Indian, so he is very interested in that part of his heritage. I think that is why he wants to see it.

Only you can make that decision for your child.
That being said...
My Mom always told me that if you have to ask whether or not something is O.K./Not O.K. or right/wrong; then you already know the answer before asking the question.

I guess I am old-fashioned when it comes to this - but the movie is rated "R" - so I would think there would be things that would be innapropriate for a 10yo. JMO.

Maybe wait for the DVD? Ds10 has seen Saving Private Ryan - he was glorifying D day, and WW2, because of some video games he played, and I wanted him to see the emotional side, that these were actual people, and not just characters in a game. It was probably one of the only movies he kept quiet for.

I was curious after all the buzz recently - checked it out on www.pluggedinonline.com - won't be taking my 13 and 15 year olds to it.

Ratings aren't what they used to be - DH and don't even see R movies!

The violence wasn't gratuitous, it was all very realistic. However I think it is more intense than a 10 year old is ready for. An older child would be able to handle it better I think.

If he is interested in exploring his Indian culture, you should definitely encourage this. Perhaps you could find some other Indian movies, Bollywood movies, that are light-hearted but let him see the dancing, food, dress, etc. When he's older there are many wonderful Indian dramas geared toward adults for him to watch.

This film is very intense. It shows so much pain, suffering and sadness in these young lives.

While there are uplifting moments, the sadness and horror is there. I would wait and rent it when he's older. Even as an adult, I found it hard to watch some of the scenes. The fact that most of it centers around such young people makes it even harder for me to think of letting a young child watch it.

That being said, I loved the movie! :thumbsup2

I just don't think it is appropriate for kids, especially pre or early teen. (Maybe that's is why it is rated R) Possibly at 16 or 17 years old, depending on the child, would be where I would be comfortatable considering it.

10 no - I'd be ok with a highschool aged child.

The movie is very real and gritty. I don't think it would be good for learning about India or Indian heritage. It really shows the dirty underbelly of society.

The slums are just as much a part of Indian society as anything else. The religious conflicts are a part of Indian history. I think it is important for one to be educated in all aspects of their culture, even those that are incredibly sad. However, this should be done with consideration to age and maturity.

I should have added "at 10." While I agree they are important, I don't think they should be the introduction KWIM?

I've been racking my brain trying to think of a comparable "American" movie. All I can come up with is Hustle and Flow. I wouldn't show that to an Indian 10 year old to be representative of American society and culture even though those elements exist.

Ok now I agree with you. It really isn't a good intro to the culture as you said. And it isn't something that needs to be seen at 10. Sorry I misunderstood. It would definitely be valuable for the OP's son to see it in the future though.
