It sounded really good on Lou Mongello's live review and I like the look of the menu.

However, I seem to have seen quite a few bad impressions of it on here.

Is this just because the menu is a bit too unusual for American tastes? Or that the restaurant actually doesnt execute the dishes very well?

Also, I am interested to hear what the atmosphere / overall experience is like.

Thanks :)

I say if the menu looks good to you, try it! I've read good reviews & not so good reviews. It probably depends on what you get & opinions always depend on individual tastes. I've been excited to try things that were rated really good here & even had whole posts made about them & have been disappointed at times. And some of my favorite things don't get any attention.

I'm looking forward to trying the Arepas & Hot & Sour Soup during my next trip which seems like they could make a meal together. :)

Yeah, thanks. I like the sound of the Arepas, although I've never heard of them before. And the Mac n Cheese is supposed to be very good!

I have heard some say they were disappointed with the servers not being like Jungle Cruise skippers. I guess this is going to be a fine line for them. They need people who are good at serving and these are not going to be always the same people who would make good Jungle Cruise skippers!

I love the food and my DD went back again and really enjoyed it. She loves the mac n cheese. She got it as a kids meal the second time she went because it is so filling.

We enjoyed it. The food was different, interesting. I went with the mac & cheese since it was the most basic thing. It tasted like creamy bechamel on top of a slightly spicy chili mac and cheese. DH went with the tofu noodle bowl, a tad spicy, I didn't like the broth that much. The restaurant is done very well, I would recommend anyone to try it at least once.

I found the food, atmosphere and overall experience to be incredibly boring. I wish they had actually made the food more authentic. I had the salad (the dressing was WAY too spicy and completely overwhelmed the salad) and the sustainable fish which was supposed to be in a lemon grass broth, but it was flavorless. My son also had a salad and the kids flank steak, which, thank goodness he shared with me because it wasn't bad. I had the kungaloosh (not great) and he had the kids Volcano, which was probably the best thing we had. We have no plans on going back here. For a better, more flavorful meal in a great atmosphere, I much prefer Sanaa at AKL.

NOTE1: We were not impressed by the quality of the food. It was if someone said, "If
were build a restaurant, they will eat." Well, we ate. We didn't truly relish the food, but
we spent money, which is what Disney wants. There is a nod to countries and areas which
are on the Jungle Cruise ride, but few instances where one can recognize the food of any
specific country due to its spices or preparation.
.
NOTE2: This review was done during the SOFT OPENING, so food quality and CM behavior may
change in the future. Contrary to what many had thought, or hoped, there are no alcohol drinks
at Skipper Canteen. At this review, lunch and dinner has the same 1-DDP Table Service menu.
At this time, FP's and ADR's are not being taken.
.
NOTE3: For a new eatery, I had thought the facility design would have more interesting and
food more unique. Although quite pleasant, there is little truly unique or fascinating. And,
even though the SERVERS continued Jungle Cruise gags, it isn't enough to warrant us going
back to the Canteen.

I enjoyed it. I had the falafel and the steak. Both were very good. The yucca fries were especially yummy. I didn't love the Desserts but the others in my party did. Our server was great. If the menu looks good to you then you should try it.

The bread with honey that comes with every meal is outstanding. I loved the Curry stew. It was really just lentils, cauliflower, butternut squash, and collard greens on a plate, but it was delicious (if you like veggies). The flavor of the veggies was outstanding. I was a bit disappointed with the atmosphere. I thought it would be much more dramatic, but a few little jokes from our server was about it. The themeing is fun.
