Is Same Use Year Necessary for Add-on?

How important is it to purchase the same use year if you are adding on points? We will buy resale if we add on. We will likely buy at a different home resort.

Is it a huge pain if you have 2 contracts with different use years?

IMO it depends on your situations, how many points are involved and how good you are at keeping up with numbers. It's much like balancing a checkbook. I'd suggest most people keep the same UY unless you go different times of the year and don't mind the extra confusion.

You can have different use years. If you do, it is like being two entirely different members. Each year remains separated from the other with separate banking deadlines, and you cannot mix points between the use years unless you transfer points from one year to the other. If you want to use both sets for one trip, you either have to do that transfer or reserve some nights with one contract and then the rest with the other and then link the reservation. You also get separate annual dues statements and bills and if you are on monthly withdrawal of dues from your checking account you get two separate withdrawals per month.

We have two use years and, though it would be somewhat easier to have just one, we do not find it either overly complicated or time-consuming to keep track.

It wouldn't be a add on, it would be a new contract and membership and twice as much work.

Too much work for me. Having 2 UY is like having 2 checking accounts. Having both homes in the same UY under the same contract is like having a checking account and savings account under one account number. It's easy to combine points all under the same UY and contract, while having 2 separate contracts, you are only allowed one transfer a UY. I have one membership, but 7 contracts under my 1 account, with 3 homes. It takes some recording keeping with using my contracts while under one UY, but that is making sure MS doesn't touch one home points vs another home points. The computer will take points and not care, but if you're saving one home points for another trip, you have to make sure you tell MS that. I think I'm pretty organized, but I do use a chart to keep things straight. I have an April UY and it fits me well. Good luck in your decision.

We bought a second smaller contract at the same resort with a different UY, since when we wanted to buy we couldn't find one with the same UY that was the right size. We've only been using it for 2 years, but its been okay. Currently I just make reservations for some nights under my main contract, then make reservations for some nights under the second one and link them together, just to leave my one transfer per year free in case I need even more points from another member! :rotfl: I actually like it for the idea of being able to do two transfers in, or one transfer out and one transfer in if I need to ...

They both come up under my DVC member login, which is nice. I don't find it too hard to manage but we also keep a several different checking and savings accounts for different purposes, so I like things spread out and am accustomed to managing it ... :confused3 Its not everybody's cup of tea, but if the contract you want is a different UY (particularly if its one of the smaller resorts/just the right size and price) I wouldn't let it stop you from making an offer.

The best advice my guide ever gave me was to keep all my contracts under one UY. We have multiple contracts at 3 different resorts. It's complex enough without having to add different UY to the equation.

I would stick to the same UY. We bought a resale and it is a different UY than the 2 others, its a pain. Not end of the earth pain but still a pain.

We have two UYs, Dec. and Feb., at our home resort. It's not been an issue for us. We bought an add-on resale at a very nice price. Using apps such as D Point has made it a no-brainer.

We have 3 contracts 2 different resorts but the same UY and that"s enough work for me to keep track of them.
