The 2nd floor of our home has smoke alarms that are hard-wired with battery backup.

This morning at 4am they started to chirp . . .DH went upstairs and nothing, they stopped. At 6am they started to chirp again. We changed the batteries at that time. Hopefully they won't go back off again.

Anyone with hard-wired battery back-up smoke alarms have any idea why they would chirp besides the batteries needing to be changed?

Yep, they chirp when the battery needs replacing. Hard wired alone is not reliable enough.

Battery.....if you promise not to laugh I will tell you about the time I tried to tell my DH there was a ghost living in our first apartment.....it was the fire alarm that needed a new battery. Took me several weeks and a lot of pleading and begging with him before he finally was up one night and realized what it was. He still tells that story to our kids when he changes our fire alarm batteries twice a year! You'd think after almost 18 years the story would get old-lol!

We have gotten into the habit of changing the batterys when we have to change the clocks for Daylight or standard time.

Actually, depending on the brand they may need to be replaced altogether-you may find that replacing the battery was a temporary solution and that they start chirping again-we have had two hard wired smoke detectors that simply wore out and had to be replaced. They Chirped like crazy even after the batteries were replaced.
