Is MS "User friendly" or strictly order takers?

Hello Everyone,

I am preparing to contact MS and make arrangements for our first trip and was just wondering what to expect when I call and what the proper protocol is. Do they offer any advice if your first choice is unavailable? If unavailable, will they suggest alternatives that show as being currectly available? I am planning on a visit this summer and would like to stay at my new home SSR. Can I request a specific area/building at this time, or is that only an option as the actual date approaches? Any tips, advice, or info. would be appreciated!

Thanks, Ken

Hello Everyone,

I am preparing to contact MS and make arrangements for our first trip and was just wondering what to expect when I call and what the proper protocol is. Do they offer any advice if your first choice is unavailable? If unavailable, will they suggest alternatives that show as being currectly available? I am planning on a visit this summer and would like to stay at my new home SSR.
I have always found them to be very helpful. Certainly, any individual CM can have a bad day, but I have yet to experience that. I have found them to be especially helpful in working on alternative arrangements, and also in making sure I understand which pile of points my ressie is coming from (we have two home resorts).
Can I request a specific area/building at this time, or is that only an option as the actual date approaches?
You can request anything your heart desires, as long as you understand that the operative word there is "request." Nothing is guaranteed except special needs requirements made through a separate Disney special needs office. So things like non-smoking, a particular location, a particular view, etc, etc, etc, are requests -- not givens. (ETA: with the exception of certain guaranteed views, like BW view or standard view at BWV, which carry different point values. You're still not guaranteed a particular villa, but you will get the category of villa you reserved.)

In addition, when you make your ressie, there is no possible way anyone could know which units will be available on a particular date. You will hear about pre-assigning villas and you will also hear about "room-ready." My sense is that most of the time the CM at the front desk just offers you whatever pops up in inventory that meets your main concerns. If that's not acceptable, they can try to work with you, but they may or may not be able to improve things.

For that reason, I usually only make one or two requests. We always request non-smoking for medical reasons because of my daughter's asthma, and I sometimes request one other thing (depending on who's with us). Often, I only request the non-smoking and talk to the CM at checkin about anything else we'd like to have. The reason I use this strategy is I don't want a situation where they meet seven out of my nine requests, but don't give us what we really want...which is non-smoking.

Other owners undoubtedly have very different approaches, but the truth is, we usually don't care where our villa is located because we're driving, only staying 4-5 days, and we don't spend much time in the villa. If we were staying longer and planned to really make the villa our Command Post, that would be different...but that's not our vacation pattern.

I've been less than impressed with MS. I've had my share of uninformed or less than friendly CM's.

I will say I called 2 days ago and the CM was just great. Really luck of the draw.

I agree with JimMia, I'd keep your requests short focusing on what is the most important thing. Often when I call I give the CM my dates and room type and let them tell me what is available. I then choose from what is available. Truth is I'm also a snoop, I like to see what is open at different times.

YFI: since you are new to this, Member Services is very user friendly in my opinion, but you need to be aware of what services they do offer.

They can tell which DVC resorts are available during your dates. In your case since you want SSR, you simply call, give them your dates, the room size, and hope it is available.

Requests for certain locations once you book, they will note but not guarantee because they don't book room locations they book reservations. The actual resort is responsible for room assignment and as Jim said that really depends on what is available when you check in. The earlier the better.

Also be aware that you can check in as early as 6am but the time for rooms to be ready for occupancy is "after" 4pm. Be prepared for that, and you won't suffer the disappointment many seem to have when they go, " I waited 6 hours for my room and did not get it until 4:40". No actually they waited 40 mins.

They can book the Dining Plan for you and even make reservations for dining if you need them to.

Enjoy your stay its a wonderful resort. But call soon, summer can fill up on certain days for certain size villas.

Overall they are very good but not as knowledgeable in some areas (as a group) as you might expect. Compared to this group, most don't know DVC as well as we do but that's not surprising. You can get a grump at times as well.

I have always had nice CMs when I call.

When they answer the phone and ask for my member number, I normally ignore the question and ask how they are. They have always been nice from there on out. Once they tell me how they are, I give them the number.
Not sure what I would do if someone refused to answer how they were doing.:rotfl:

The first time I called, I told them up front to be patient with me as I was brand new. They took their time and answered all my questions.

Even now, years later, before I hang up I always have written down my balance in each contract and I know exactly when the seven month window is.
