Is MDE wrong or is MK really struggling today?

I was just coming here to ask what the conditions were in the parks. I was checking the lines app and half the rides at MK are closed! Other parks are seeing closures too but not as bad. I checked Orlando weather and did see that they are under heavy thunderstorms right now. I was curious what things were like in the parks if anyone happened to be there now.

I'd say it's about 85% Tornado Warning/Weather Related and 15% usual outages due to cast cutbacks causing lack of ride maintenance

Huh? Outages due to cast member cutbacks? You guys do things weird over there, DL doesn’t shut down rides just because they cut back staff.

We are the same way, fighting our way through the crowd exiting while we pull out our ponchos. I agree that the theaters have to be built well, it just seems like a scary situation to have everything full with tense frightened guests. I know I personally would be a little more uneasy crammed inside with a bunch of people rather than trying to get back to my hotel room

Only basing this on my experience with other tense situations - I've never had to shelter from a tornado at Disney.

However, I would think that a theatre full of guests taking cover from a tornado would actually be a fairly upbeat, positive crowd. People will be trying to make it seem like a fun, exciting adventure for the kids, and that kind of attitude spreads quickly. There would be a lot of laughter and positive comments and generally cooperative behaviour. People will be looking for guidance from castmembers, and I'm quite certain Disney has briefed them on what they need to do (ie, pass out cookies, put on a movie, etc).

Vacationers in general, tend to be a fairly happy bunch. Things won't get ugly until the crisis passes and people start lining up at Guest Services, looking for their compensatory Grand Floridian Upgrade.

Rain looks like moving out now over Epcot. Heavy rain for less than an hour (we rode out the tornado warning in Mission:space and the games after. Cooled down quite a bit. My dd and her friend headed to MK and I’m heading to resort to get dry shoes

We were at HS this morning and hopped over to Epcot around noon for lunch at Via Napoli. We planned to head out of Epcot after lunch (we were also watching the radar.) We hopped right on a bus to AKL and had no sooner than pulled out and it started to pour around 2:30-3:00ish. However, by the time we got to AKL it had stopped raining or was just sprinkling. We are at the hotel now for a break (4:05) and no rain. It did look awfully dark at Epcot.

I’ve never seen hail that large! Other photos of hail looked similar as if a glob of pellets were frozen and melded into one large ball.

Yup, that would hurt!

Yes the friend texted hours ago, assumed it was an all clear by now, was sharing an explanation for the "MDE closures" ... I think there are more closures there than others because of all the outside attractions.

Haha so true! Based on reports from the hurricanes I think you might be right! I don't live in an area where we have such extreme weather so I don't have a lot to go off of.

We were at AK today. We were waiting for the 3:00 Nemo show when my sister and I (and I noticed several around us too) got the emergency notice that we were under a tornado warning. The show went on completely normal. We left the show and it started pouring hard about 30 seconds after walking outside (horrible timing, right?) I assume Disney decision making people were watching the radar, but I guess even an active tornado warning is not enough to have everyone take shelter.

Whew! I was worried there was something I wasn't aware of and should be doing. Also I'm the nosiest person on earth.

People have to take responsibility for their own safety. Disney (nor any other business) has no obligation to provide tornado shelter for 56,000 people.

Anybody who chooses to go to MK, or to a grocery store, or a park, or a post office, or a bank, etc has sole responsibility to look out for their own safety if "an act of God" occurs.
