Is losing points the end of the world?

I had to cancel an RCI exchange last year due to new job. It was a one bedroom exchange. I just called and only a studio is available for the dates I need which are not flexible. I would be losing 26 points. I went ahead and waitlisted but not sure what the chances of it becoming available are. Thinking I should bite the bullet and do the studio although my heart and points are on a one bedroom. Ugh no more exchanges for me:sad2:

I really cannot offer much advice, but just wanted to say that I tried to do RCI exhanges a few years back...they never had anything that we would have wanted or needed available, so I gave up. I did not want to lose points, especially if the plans were not set in stone. You have to remember, t hat most of those timeshare owners buy specific WEEKS, therrefore limiting the times . (At least I *think* that's the way it works).

Having said that, it is obviously NOT the end of the world, but to me, it is like lighting money on fire. Sometimes these circumstances cannot be controlled. I suppose it is a matter of perspective. You could always chalk it up to "lesson learned", and move on.

I lost 4 points in 2010, due to something similiar. To me, that was no big deal until I added up what we pay per point :scared1:.

Since then, I have researched DVC inside & out, and feel much more knowledgable. Good luck :surfweb:

I'm dealing with an interesting offshoot of this today. We are considering an Oct trip. My UY is DEC. Thus if we had to cancel, I would be beyond my banking window and unable to use those points (130 in all). I have to decide if we take a leap of faith and hope not have to cancel for some unforseen reason, or to be more prudent and do something else. I guess that is one of the risks of travel toward the end of one's UY. I'd basically have to be okay with losing 130 points.

I've been pretty lucky in getting my exchanges, I've done a couple, but you do run the risk of losing the points if you have to cancel and don't use them, than having to pay the $95 exchange fee.

I ended up getting the studio since I didn't want to chance it, the bad thing is I'll have 26 points left and the nightly points for for a one bedroom is 27 points! So if I wanted to stay somewhere for one night provided it was available I would one point short and again would need to pay another $95! ERRRR!
Or 18 points for a studio somewhere if they have availability.

I lost a few this year..

As far as I can tell the world is still on it's axis and turning just fine :)

It's only the "end of the world" if you let it be, I just got over it :)

I will be loosing 6 points end of the month - what am I going to do? Nothing.

Hi, Had this happen to me last year. I cancelled a February vacation and points were set to expire end of May. I was able to book 4 nites in March for DH and I. But still had points to use. Got a "last minute" reservation for 5 nites at SSR for my DD and myself in May. Still had a few points left I was unable to use. Now I cannot even tell you the exact number!! Just move on and enjoy the exchange in the studio :) Joan

I hope not since im set to lose about 100 points...didn't think this day would ever come

Rather than lose them, is there no way to offer them to someone on the rent/trade board at dirt cheap? Or to Davids rental service? I have never done either at the last minute, so I honestly don't know. But I'd at least try to rent them or even give them to someone who could use them at the last minute (do something nice and pay it forward kind of thing...)

I would have given them to someone if I knew someone who had needed them, but (A) I didn't realize I had screwed up until the month they expired... and even if if I had (B) I am opposed to the "renting" concept especially when it comes to using a broker so....

I have only ever lost just a few points. I rent them or just give them away.
It was easier to give them away before the limit on transfers. No one wants to waste their one transfer on just a couple points.

Is it optimum? No. Is it the end of the world? Clearly not. I can think of about a million worse things that can happen to a person.

It is a big fat bummer though. :goodvibes :sad1:

Why not do a last-minute rental here? You will at least get something for the points.

Points that were exchanged into RCI cannot come back in the DVC, they have to be used on an RCI exchange. I'm not sure that RCI allows rentals.

I lost a few points one year when I added on late in my UY and they didn't let me bank. Now they let you bank, but I donated a stay to a GTKTW volunteer and still had 5-10 points left over that were lost. I was annoyed, but it wasn't the end of the world.
