Is it worth it for me/Would you do it all over again?

HI. We have gone back and forth trying to decide if ownership is for us. We are a family of 3 so we really will never need anything bigger than a 1 bedroom. Right now the offer is $101 point. If you owners out there had to do it now at that price would you? Is it still worth it?

I don't plan on going to DW every year, probably never to CA or SC. Would absolutely trade for the cruise but it seems like it would eat up all my points for three years just to pay for DD.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks folks!!!!

IMO as long as you can rent points from current dvc owners for less then 13 dollars a point, you are better off to simply rent points and stay 5 days Sun-Thurs, at what ever resort you can get into. I say this based upon you saying you don't want to go to WDW every year.

I think you are better off to take the 15k and invest it and simply allow that money to grow for 30 years, and rent points. The price to rent points hasn't risen in the last 10 years. Why pay 2006 prices (101 per point)when you can rent at 1996 prices?(10 dollars per point)

Good luck.

It is definitely worth it. Though the cost is $101 per point, I would still buy in. My husband and I bought 160 points in October, and I am kicking myself that we didn't buy more...say around 210 points instead. I know I am going to add-on within a year or two (maybe sooner) because we are looking to start a family and would like to always use the 1-br suites. I went back and forth for three years about ownership, but so many friends who own say there is nothing like it...especially if you are a big fan of Disney. I really don't think you will regret your decision.

i rarely, if ever, pay full price for anything, so i would wait for another deal like the friends and family we used to buy-in or i would buy at a sold out resort with lower cost or go with a reseller for the lower cost.

trading out for other resorts/cruises is facilitated with angles like renting your points and applying the cash toward a total cash ressie; or paying for one ressie with points and the other with cash.

the flexibility of the disney program is what hooked us [as did the f&f cost back then].

It is absolutely worth every penny. But if I were you, I would look at resale. It's less expensive and you can buy a smaller contract. If you buy say 50 points, bank and borrow will give you more than 5 days (SUN-Thurs) on 1 bedroom at most of resort.

I have a 3 year old, and he reminds me constantly that it was one of the best purchase that I ever made whenever he says he wants to go back to Disney. We went twice already last year.

Just watch out for temptation of add-on once you join.

It is definitely worth it. That being said, once I was "in the know" the add ons we did were resale. Lower price and access to sold out resorts as a home base.

Think ahead also, of how you might use DVC in the future. We also are a family of three and the 1 bdrm didn't cut it after a while. When DS became a teenager who hogged the bathroom, an older teen who tended to sleep in all morning and then finally wanted to bring a friend - that two bedroom really started to look good. Once we stayed in a 2 bedroom it was really hard to go back. Eventually the room becomes important - not just as a way station to the park and a place to sleep. Not having a teenager plus suitcase, backpack, etc in the livingroom is great.

I wouldn't do it at that price. I'm glad I did buy DVC (four years ago for $63 a point resale), but I wouldn't pay $100 a point for it.

Boat? Is that you?

You'll be able to buy for $85-$90 again very soon. When DVC raises prices it shifts the activity to resales. I can't believe that DVC can spend another $5 per point supporting ROFR. They will have to offer another major discount to get the pressure of ROFR. I would not buy at $100, not because I don't support DVC but rather the economics just don't justify that price. DVC needs to foucus on improving the value of ownership to its members.

IF (notice how big that word is):
  • You'll be going to WDW at least every other year
  • You'd normally stay in deluxe, on-property accomodations
  • You can stay almost entirely on weekday nights
  • You can plan your trips 11-7 months in advance
  • You won't waste points on low-value exchanges like cruises
  • You don't have to finance your purchase
Then, yes, it's still worth it.

A key aspect that is often over looked. When one factors in the debt service of a dvc time share, the deal becomes sour in a hurry.

You know even a few years ago I would not have offered this opinion, but I do now... I'm glad we own, I'm glad we bought when we did, I wouldn't change anything, but buying in at 101 a point is a little too rich for my blood.... perhaps check resales & their going price if you're really serious about it, but if you can rent points at 10.00 each, that seems to be your best bet....

I have been a DVC member since 2001 and I am very happy with my DVC purchase. For this specific poster, I would reccomend buying the smallest contract possible from The Timeshare Store (25-50 points if possible) so you can be a "real DVC member" and rent any extra points you may need for $10-11 pp from DIS.

It is WAY SAFER to get points transferred into your account than it is to constantly try to get a reservation on the open market. Although 99% of transactions are problem free, unless you are a DVC member with your own account, you never have 100% control of your Disney vacation.

Bill that is very good advice. The aspect of transfering points at 10 dollars rather then renting one is very sound advice.

It is worth it. However 101 is a bit hard to swallow. Its 4000 more than I paid 6 months ago.

I think I would look resale or wait for a promotion at 101. There will always be some :)

Welcome back, er, "Walt" - at least for a little while....

Yes, but crisi, four years from now $100/point is going to be the price people look back at and think it was cheap to buy in then. ;)

I bought less than two years ago at the pre-opening SSR price ($79, IIRC) and already it's gone up over $20....

Oh, and heck yes it is worth it!!!
