Is it really worth it or needed ???

We never get the insurance. I have a couple of cc's that offer trip insurance already.

Also, we've had last minute emergencies, and Disney always lets us change our ressies. First time, my dd got sick (stomach virus) the night before. Disney let us come a day later and change our package. Another time, dh couldn't get off from work on our arrival day. I called Disney 2 days before our trip and told them the rest of the family would be there, but dh would be arriving a day later. No problems.

Anyway, check your credit cards.

Last year I was scheduled for a European vacation. two days before I was to leave my dad passed away. Thankfully I had insurance and quickly got back every thing except the cost of the insurance ~130 dollars.

I don't travel without it anymore.

I have never purchased the insurance but I have friends that did and were really glad they had it.

For a long trip with flights involved during the peak of hurricane season (historic peak is Sept 10th, so anything within a few weeks before or after that point is peak season) I would get insurance from someone - not Disney - there are plenty of online quote sites for travel insurance, just make sure it is a reputable company and read the fine print. Small price to pay just in case.

This is a question for your calculator.

If you were to cancel at the last-minute, how much would you lose? You could probably cancel your rooms and get back 100%. I don't know about your flight costs. Your food money and ticket money wouldn't be a problem. Likely you'd be able to cancel at the last minute and lose essentially nothing.

Sometimes travel insurance makes sense. For example, on a cruise you need to have medical evacuation insurance. It costs so little, and IF you were to become sick, it'd cost a fortune to get you back to the US. That's worthwhile.

In your case, I suspect it's not worth the cost of the insurance.

Very good points. I would add that you should read the fine print carefully before purchasing travel insurance. Some policies have lots of exclusions.

I've never bought it.

I am booking my WDW trip and the one thing I cant decide on is the Travel Insurance !! I am going with my sister and my DD as well as two of DD friends . It is a sweet 16 trip for my DD . We are going the week of 8/28 which is hurricane season ... I never go during this time of year and we always drive it this time we are flying .. Should I take the insurance just for the piece of mind ? I am all ready to book everything else just nervous on how the weather can be and with the flying if my luggage is lost !! I must sound CRAZY !! LOL :rotfl:

I don't use the Disney insurance because as others have mentioned it can be found cheaper elsewhere. But we do get insurance.
And just a PSA for anyone travelling out of country.. I can NOT STRESS ENOUGH how important medical travel insurance is.
We've used it. Once for a walk in clinic, another time for a hospital stay and CT scans etc. It saved us at least 13-15 thousand. :scared1:

After those experiences I just don't ever want to worry or have that "what if" feeling about my trip either. It's worth it to me.

I'm a convert, too. We had to use it for a cancelled cruise. DH ended up in the hospital 2 days before the trip. We got all of our money back.

I agree with reading the fine print. All trip insurances are not the same.

I did get it .. Figuring it was a special trip and I do not want to loose the money I am going with three teen girls ANYTHING can happen over the summer !! Kids get sick and all and I dont want to loose the money ! The airline tickets scare me the most !! :scared1: I figured Why take the chance !! it is hurricane season and well you dont know my luck !! LOL :lmao:

Good call! So many things can happen that are totally out of your control. Most airlines have really bad or expensive airfare change/nonrefundable policies, so right there it would be worth it. Fingers crossed that you don't need it!

Coming from another country, I ALWAYS get trip insurance.

Trip insurance to me has nothing to do with whether we have to cancel the trip last minute or not (which seems like the most talked about topic here...) My biggest concern is getting sick while actually there, or losing any of my luggage getting there or on the way back.

Maybe it's just my Canadian mind set, but I don't think I'd ever go to Disney without some sort of travel/medical insurance. Nobody ever EXPECTS things to go wrong, but sometimes they do and insurance is a small price to pay.

I always get the insurance. There are 3 of us and the total amount for the insurance I get is $48.

Anything can happen. Your plane can be delayed, you can become ill, there can be a family emergency....

For $48 it's worth it. Our luggage was delayed on one trip, and I got $500 from the trip insurance company.

Our plane was delayed another occasion and we didn't arrive until the day after we were supposed to. The trip insurance refunded the cost of the first night of our hotel stay.

Some friends of ours planned a WDW vacation for their 3 children's Spring Break. One of their children came down with the flu and they could not take the trip. They were able to get the refund on the hotel, but they had not purchased the trip insurance. $1600 in airline tickets down the drain. Ouch.

Why? :confused3
Most airlines allow a change of dates for a fee.

OP, another vote for insuremytrip.com. We use them for cruises. Not sure if we'll get insurance for our Aug trip. We usually don't but this time we booked as a package (free dining) so the 45 days out thing worries me.
Also you never know how weather can affect things. My sister went to Barbados for her bday one October. They were due to fly into Miami and connect to another flight up north. There were tropical storms in S. Florida that slowly tracked up the east coast. So even after weather was clear in Miami, they wouldn't fly her there cuz by then the storms were closer to Philly. She ended up having to pay another 3 nights hotel unexpectedly. Not sure if she had insurance but if she did she would have been reimbursed for the cost. Luckily, the weather in Barbados was still beautiful. :thumbsup2

I buy the insurance- i'm already paying thousands for the trip, I'm not going to quibble over $139.

Yup I am getting it this time. This trip was three times as much as our normal trips because we had more people, but as my brother is under 17... his is free. :)

For us the Disney insurance was actually cheaper. Call Disney and see how much it is. They actually use a really big company to give you travel insurance. Ask them for the number and name of the insurer. They will let you call and find out the details. :)

But, keep in mind the fee is per ticket and then you have to shell out the difference in price for a new ticket. If you got a decent price for your tickets, you may have to pay a whole lot more to replace them.

The cost of insurance for my family of was only $134. That will pay us back in spades if we have to cancel, rebook, come home early, get delayed, or lose our luggage. Our Disney vacation costs in excess of $5000 w/ the airfare.

I can't say for WDW trip insurance but DCL uses Access America who also offers different levels of coverage and different prices on www.insuremytrip.com. So I can buy direct & get better coverage @ half the price than if buying through DCL. Also when buying through DCL they don't cover pre-existing conditions which Access America does cover if bought within 14 days of 1st deposit. DCL doesn't actually purchase the policy until final payment due date which is beyond the 14 day rule.
I wonder if that's the same company used for WDW vacations.
