Is it possible to stay dry on Kali?

When I went on it we got totally drenched. It was like we jumped in the pool. The ride is so short I honestly didn't think it was worth it vs. how SOAKED we got. It's funny to see that some people hardly got wet! I know it's a water ride, but walking around with soaking wear shorts is not enjoyable! (After I took them off in the bathroom and rang them out!!)

I am debating Kali in 2 weeks. We also got pushed off of Dinosaur, bummer. We usually go to WDW when it it really hot, and we are fine with getting soaked, it dries so fast. Only issue is FEET, we try to wear sandals, switch to sandals, or just focus on holding our feet up.

We just do not believe in ponchos for water rides, it seems wimpy to us. haha. We like the feeling of danger, who will get soaked?

But the strategy for us is to ride Kali like rides last, before leaving the park for a break, or leaving for the day. So if the worst happens, it is ok, as we are leaving anyway.

I dunno...do you feel lucky?

I'm not lucky. I got one of the drench seats.
No, I am not feeling lucky, haha!
That was me. No amount of tucking, covering, or holding any part of it closed would have saved me.
This is what I am afraid of. I am wondering if it is better to just bring a change of clothes? The problem is I have "special" outfits planned for us that day, so we would have to change first into some sort of water gear, then change again after the ride. I read that there are restrooms and lockers nearby so maybe that's not too much of an inconvenience?
Yes. Dollar store poncho and dollar store flip flops put on before you board. Carry a water resistant string bag and put your shoes in it. Keep it under the poncho. When you get off, offer the ponchos to others or toss them. Then put your shoes back on and go.
I have read several threads where people take their shoes on the ride but stow them. We have strollers we will need to park.. is there a reason we can't switch our shoes before we get in line?

This is also a question I wanted to ask... is it WORTH IT? I am willing to go the poncho route, or bring changes of clothes, etc, but is this ride worth it? Is it something that is worth the hassle of having to change clothes? Its been soooo long since I went on it, I can't remember. We have two kids, ages 6 and 8 if that helps at all.

Yeah unfortunately it fits best into our day right in the middle b/c that was when we were in Asia. So I really don't want to walk around the rest of the day all wet. Such a bummer about Dinosaur! Hope you enjoy your day in AK anyway!

It is a *very* short ride and IMO not that great of a ride. The only "thrill" of it for me is the excitement of guessing who is going to be in the "seat of doom". Every time we ride it I swear I'm not going to bother with it anymore. But my kids love it and always want me to go on it with them (and that allows me to pull the "I don't like KRR, but I still went on it with you so we could enjoy it as a family" card later in the trip :) ). I do have an adult son who doesn't bother to ride it anymore. He also doesn't like getting drenched *and* refuses to "humiliate himself" (his words, not mine) by wearing a poncho. His job is to stand on the bridge and get a picture of us as we pass by. If I wasn't confident in my waterproofing skills, I wouldn't ride it.

There is a restroom and lockers nearby. We brought changes of clothes, but we were so, so wet, especially me, because I was in the seat of doom. I looked like I stood under one of those waterpark buckets like at Great Wolf Lodge. Even after I changed I was uncomfortable, and my hair looked like a drowned poodle. The thrill and length of the ride wasn't worth how awful it made me feel. I know it's a water ride, and I expect to get wet, but this was unreasonable.

To add: we had reservations at Boma for after AK, so I cared that I didn't look awful.

I've only ridden about 5 times and I've never gotten wet. I'm always at the highest point of the raft when it hits the bottom of the drop. I was disappointed because I at least wanted to see what it was like to get wet. Maybe next trip.

If you don't want to get wet then I wouldn't ride it. I don't see the point in riding Kali or Splash if you don't intend to get wet.

I agree. The ride isn't worth it if you don't want to get wet. It's short and not much to it.

I was the one that got soaked last trip. My kids were upset since they wanted to get soaked. It felt good on a hot August day.

Amen! On a hot day, we all hope to be the ones to get soaked and are quite disappointed if we don't.

So sad to get the email today that Dinosaur is closed for our November date. But, we are determined not to let it get us down so we got a FP for Kali instead. I have not been on this since I was a child and we avoid it because getting soaked doesn't sound like fun, especially in fall weather! But I'm willing to give it a try to give my kids a great day at AK. :)

We have a bunch of dollar store ponchos that we have never had to use... I know the quality can't be great. Will this be sufficient to keep us mostly dry or do we need something more substantial?

Any other tips? Thanks!
As long as your not sitting near me you'll be fine. The raft always turns at the top of the hill and I'm going down backwards.

Me, too! I'm in the seat of doom EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. We actually love KRR. The first time we rode we were not prepared and every single piece of clothing I was wearing was soaked. Now we plan for it! We all bring a change of clothes in case we need it, wear shoes that can get wet. We actually love to ride early in low crowds so we can ride over and over again. Then we change and are on our way.

I changed into my bathing suit last time because I've gotten soaked with a poncho if you go down backwards. Never fails, but we love it and keep coming back for more.

This is what happened to me last year. Honestly, I didn't care too much about getting wet but I got ponchos just in case. It just turned out that on our AK day I started to come down with a cold and was a bit feverish, so I decided to wear my poncho (yes, the dollar store type that looks and feels like a plain old cheap plastic bag). Also, the backpack we had couldn’t fit in the lockers, so it served me well to wear the poncho and wear the backpack on my front and protect it a bit from the water. What I also do is, I place my feet on the thing in the middle so they are not actually on the floor where they get more wet because of the “flooding”.

Well, silly old me went and put the hood over my head and was all ready to go…..and our side was the one to go down first. My hood went flying off my head so my head got soaked, DH got soaked and the back pack got a little wet (nothing major, although one of our water bottles also spilled around that time, so the backpack was pretty roughed up with water lol). That day was mostly overcast (which was good!) so in my sick state it didn’t take long for me to start feeling cold, so DH and I avoided indoor stuff for the next hour or so because the a/c was freezing.

So in short, yes you can get wet even with a poncho and I wear a poncho because I don’t want to take time out to change clothes and because I enjoy the ride with or without the getting wet component. We had originally decided we were only going to ride Kali depending on how we felt that day and based on what the wait times are like then, but since our Dinosaur FPs for our upcoming trip are no more, we are trying to get Kali FPs instead.

We wore Dollar Store ponchos, tucked in around us, and stayed dry! As we left the ride, we offered our ponchos to those waiting in line!

This is exactly what we do. Even using this method you can still get a little wet.

I'm always (I swear always) in the "seat of doom" I never come off that ride dry! So I've learned my lesson and I alway plan to go on it last thing before we leave. So if I'm drenched I walk out of the park and back to my room. And if I'm next to some non-family member on the bus I'm so sorry!

Spot on. Thats the point of these wet rides, to get wet.

Because some of us enjoy the other 99% of the ride -- especially on Splash Mountain. There's a lot more to the ride than just the drop and the potential for getting wet. FWIW, I don't wear a poncho on Splash because I've never come close to getting thoroughly soaked on that ride (but I do take a plastic grocery bag to sit on because I don't like walking around with a wet butt even when it's 100 degrees outside). A sleeve or the side of my shorts, maybe, but I've never come off of there looking like I just jumped in the pool with my clothing on. As far as I'm concerned, you have a small chance of getting "appropriately" splashed on Splash Mountain (and that usually happens *after* the drop) but a very very slim chance of getting soaked and even then it will be nothing like Kali soaked.

As for Kali River Rapids, it's a fun family ride. It's one of the only -- if not *the* only* -- ride that all 7 or 8 of us can ride together and actually see each other's faces and interact during the ride. I like that aspect of it and that makes it worth riding. I don't mind wrapping myself in plastic to stay dry. As my kids get older and decide they don't like taking the chance of getting soaked (and we're a "no bags" family so lugging around a change of clothing isn't going to happen), we will probably start skipping this ride. But for now, I do what I need to to enjoy it with my family.

I don't understand why people care if some of us don't want to get wet on water rides (that's not directed at anyone specific -- just a general statement). How is it affecting you??? (again, that's a "general" you.) If the "waterproofers" are enjoying themselves and not bothering anyone else by staying dry, why does it matter? As far as I'm concerned, neither Splash nor Kali is a ride that was designed with the sole purpose of getting people soaked/wet. They both have a story to tell and other elements that are very enjoyable (well, Splash does...Kali is questionable on that). Now, those huge boats (at other amusement parks) that simply go up a hill, turn a corner, and go down a hill splashing hundreds of gallons of water on the entire boat full of people...*those* are designed simply with the intention of getting people soaked. I've been on one of those once (when I was a teenager). I hated it. I will never ride one again - even with a poncho. :)

It's definitely possible but I wouldn't chance it. I've ridden and gotten soaked and ridden and gotten off dry as a bone (literally nothing :( ) so yeah ponchos are a great idea if you don't want to get wet!
