Is it possible to get a bad Yankee Candle?

Today I bought a 22 0z. Seaside Holiday candle, and I've been burning it for hours now.

I can't smell it! I asked my boys and DH, and they've said "nope...I don't smell a thing!"

I haven't bought a big jar candle since last year (I got hooked on the tart burners) and I don't remember if it takes a while for the scent to become noticable or not.

What gives? Did I get a dud?

Remember Ricola's Yankee candle that smelled like motor oil? :p From his posts about it, I would say, yes! :p

Honestly? I'm not that impressed with Yankee Candles anymore. Seems as if they aren't consistent. Some candles I buy smell great, others have no scent. I'm sticking with my $4.00 WalMart jar candles that consistently smell great. I just wish they had a bigger variety of scents. :)

I usually go with the cheap ones too. My favorite is vanilla and I really can't stand too many of the other scents, they give me headaches.
Blondie, I'd check with the store, maybe it was a bad batch.

Blondie--I have a Seaside Holiday, and I *swear* I cannot smell anything from it unless it's been burning for HOURS. DH says I'm  crazy, and it's fine. So maybe there is something about it that I do not pick up on (or you either). Who knows? I do think it is a pretty light scent to begin with.

I agree!

I also almost always buy tarts. If it doesn't smell right at least its only $1....I do have a large Key Lime Pie and thankfully it smells wonderful!!

I love my tarts and tartburners though!

I think the KeyLime, Peach and Butter Cream are the only scents that I've found to be consistent.

Serena -- you'd like the Butter Cream if you like vanilla. Yummy!

Seaside Holiday is my favorite scent, too bad it's not consistent. I had a little votive Seaside Holiday in my bedroom. One night I said, "Mmmmm, something smells good in here" and sniffed around until I found what it was. It was the candle. I lit it the next night and there was no scent at all. :smooth:

I love the Car Jars, especially the Seaside Holiday and Macintosh. I'll just buy those from now on and buy my candles at WalMart, unless I'm in the mood for Butter Cream which I'm in the mood for right now. :p

Butter cream sure sounds good. :)

Hmmm....maybe it's just the scent then.

My 22 0z. size Buttercream, Orange Cupcake, Christmas Cookies and Banana Nut Bread all smell wonderful when they are burning.

Maybe I just got used to the strong scented tart burners, and I should just stick with them from here on out!

I have stopped buying Yankee candles because I don't think they're as strong as they used to be.

I bought some jar candles at Target during Christmas - I think Banana Nut Bread, Cinnamon Bun and Sugar Cookie or something to that effect. They smelled so good I bought more for my friends as gifts. Target quickly sold out of the Cinnamon Bun. They were great! I think they were a Target brand.

Yes, I've had some dud YC's. I have been very disappointed the last two years with Christmas Cookie. I don't know if they make too many and keep them in inventory for the following year(s)? All I know is when I first got hooked on CC, it would smell through most of my house, now I can be standing right next to it and hardly smell it. I also bought Lemon Scent because the girl said it smelled so strong and I could hardly smell it unless I confined it in a small area i.e. bathroom. I always buy the large jars too.

However, I bought the Chocolate Chip Cookie one and have it burning now and could smell it within a 1/2 hour of lighting it. It's making me hungry. I may order a couple more online if they still have them.

I have bought a couple triple scent old virginia candles and have had very good luck with them. If you order online, they usually have free shipping for orders over $30. Okay, I'm slithering away now. ;)

Excuse my ignorance - but what are Tart burners & Yankee Candles?

We have a Yankee Candle Store at my local mall and I always walk by there as fast as I can holding my breath. I can't stand the combined scents of all the candles !

Bonzo, it's a very popular brand of candle. You can check them out here on their website.

Now that I've burned my new Seaside Holiday scent for a few days, the more I burn it, the better it smells throughout the house. Maybe it just needed to get broken in?

I've not seen the Chocolate Chip scent yet in any of my local stores, but when I do, I'm buying it!

Ah ha!

Thanks for that - and I found some info on Tart Burners.

Blondie yes it is possible. This is why the flagship store has a "seconds room" where they sell candles that didn't get a smell, or that the wax didn't harden properly making the candle look ugly, but still have the scent.

Take it back and tell them you want a new one. I do believe that seaside holiday is a lighter scent; it could be that your olfactory senses just don't pick it up. Especially if you have been burning stronger scented ones.

I'm sorry - but I am a Yankee Candle devotee! I will not accept all this bad talk of Yankee Candles :)!!!!!!

My favorites: Harvest - Snow Angel - Christmas Wreath - Cotton - Fireside - Mango - Coconut

I also love Key Lime Pie - but DH gags on that one!

Me too!

I buy candles from a guy who lives in our town. Same size, more reasonably priced than Yankee, and they smell really good. The kids get me Yankee Candles for Christmas/Mother's Day, and they've always smelled fine, but would imagine it's possible to get a defective one.

Yankee has changed over the years. I think the new changes and incosistancy in quality that some of you have found are due mainly to the fact that the company has changed hands. Right about the time that those of us who are devotees noticed more and more promotions, coupons etc is when the new owners took over. Before it was more of a private ownership headed by the man who founded it(have been to the flagship store many times cannot remember his name). They have been under new ownership for the past few years and I could be wrong but I think they are now a public company(traded on NY stock exchange) although I am unsure of this.

By the way if you have never visited the flagship store in Deerfield MA you MUST go. There are many activities and even a room with Santa(no fake beard and rubber boots for this guy)who will make you think he is the real thing. Check out their website. It is a great fall weekend trip if you live on the east coast within a three hour radius.
