I bid on a picture that I thought was of my grandmother (she was an artist's model). My sister told me that the picture I bid on was NOT her, though it was the same artist. I was going to surprise my mom with the picture, which is not the original but is a print from 1918. Meanwhile, my bid was accepted. I asked the seller if I could retract the bid and explained the situation. She told me that ebay does not allow that and she had already been charged a 20% seller's fee.

I understand this isn't the seller's fault and I will pay the $75 for the picture if it's the ethical thing to do, but I was wondering if I could offer the seller her 20% and not buy the picture? Thanks for any input.

The seller can retract a bid however they don't 'have' to but if you had a genuine reason they should but they want a sale at the end of the day.

You can be naughty and just not pay at the end of the auction

Sure the seller will contact eBay and bombard you with messages but eventually eBay will just refund the sellers fee's and place one black mark on your account whether they exist? Maybe prob deletes every 6 months I dunno (I'm sure you get 2 or 3 non payments before eBay suspend an account? But don't worry we only human it's not going to affect you unless you constantly making non payments

Or just make new account and outbid yourself and forget the whole experience

As a seller on eBay I've had a request to cancel and I immediately think yeah yeah your trying it on pay me!!!!!! I'm desperate! Then I think of the valid reason and the fact they genuinely contacted me I accepted

Thank you. It was a Best Offer bid and the seller accepted mine which closed the auction. I guess I'll just pay for the print and figure lesson learned!

You can always realist on ebay and resell the item

I went ahead and paid for the item, and then the seller sent me a refund! She said once I paid she found she was able to do that without penalty so I very much appreciate that she did that for me, as she certainly didn't have to.
