Is it okay to check luggage with food?

I'm finally allowing myself to pack and over the last few weeks, I have gathered more snack foods that I realized. It's too much for carry-on. Southwest "recommends" that you pack food as carry-on. Has anyone checked luggage with food? Was everything okay?
(I realized it will not be handled delicately and will pack it accordingly.)

As long as none of it is perishable, it will be OK. Perishables, of course, might rot if the luggage goes astray.

The other reason that they suggest that you don't pack food is that certain more dense things, such as chocolate or smoked meats, can look like plastic explosives in an x-ray image.

You sure can!

On our last trip I packed plenty of poptarts and cereal bars for quick breakfasts on the run!

Thank you both for your help. My "snack bag" is now officially packed! Woohoo - one piece of luggage closer to Disney! :earsboy:
