The value resorts are just that, a great value. The rooms are smallish, they are usually very crowded and noisy, and frequently are inundated with either cheerleading or football groups. The pools are large and cute, but sitting out in the blazing Florida sun with very little shady areas is not my cup of tea. Those are not features that I want when I vacation to WDW, so I don't stay at value resorts. I don't do the parks commando style - I've been to WDW many times, and I like to combine park hopping with resort lounging, so for my personal taste, I prefer the deluxe resorts when I can afford them, and failing that, I usually move over to moderates.
That being said, if the day comes that I can't afford a deluxe or mod, then I will happily check out the values. The difference is I know what to expect, and I don't expect to get moderate or deluxe amenities when I've paid value prices. Just as I don't expect a savannah view when I've booked standard, just because other people have gotten upgrades that they haven't paid for. This is Disney World, and like a poster above said, it's not a cheesy Motel 6 down the highway. You just need to keep your expectations realistic.
