I want to preface this post and say, this is NOT meant to be a let's-bash-other-guests post or anything of the sort. It is a simple question only. :goodvibes

Just curious...
When you are vacationing in WDW and you are watching a parade, does it bother you or become a magic spoiler when you hear people around you say things like, "the person in that suit must be hot" or "that is not the same Belle that we saw in the parade on Monday" or even "I always thought Jasmine would look more middle eastern and not so American"?

When I was with my sister in EPCOT in December and we met Marie....she made a comment about how cozy "the person" must be inside there be inside there since it was 50 degrees out. At first I said, "what person" - do you mean Marie? Of course she is, she has all that fur. Then she got a little matter-of-factish and said louder, "no, the person in the cat suit!" :scared1: Then I had to tell her to be quiet because there are kids in front of us. She actually got mad and stormed off and we separated for about an hour.

Anyhow, I just wonder if anybody else is really sensitive to that. ;) Do you ever tell people to not say anything and be cognizant of the kids around?

What suit? :confused3

I'm in the entertainment business and have performed quite a few times at WDW. In that capacity, I've spent time in backstage areas of various parks, in the utilidors underneath MK, etc. Back in "the day" it was a HUGE deal that no one take pictures backstage (not even of buildings, much less performers getting in and out of costumes) as that would "ruin the magic." I was shocked a few years ago when, at the end of the evening, we (along with thousands of other guests) were directed to the "service road" BEHIND the Main Street shops to get the crowds to the exit more quickly. And you can now take a tour of those areas that used to be strictly forbidden to guests. So apparently those rules have been relaxed considerably.

Not sure what this has to do with the OPs post? :confused3

To answer the original question: I take issue with that. I will say something to people that make comments like that and tell them that it is is the real Cinderella, Belle, Mickey, etc. If they go on in front of my kids, I will ask them to stop. :thumbsup2

I believe the poster was pointing out that Disney itself doesn't seem to be as extreme in protecting the magic as they used to be.

My niece once saw Mickey with his head off waiting on the train to ride in for the MK opening - we were on the monorail and it passed the train. That shocked me - she was 13 so it wasn't a big deal to her but she did say it was a bit disconcerting. Can you imagine if a 4 year old saw that?

I actually feel sorry for people who make comments like that. My MIL used to go out of her way to tell my kids that characters weren't real and it made me so mad!!! My kids told me one time how sad they were for grandma that she didn't believe in magic!!

They know now but as we say - sometimes in life it is fun to suspend belief of what you know to be true and just to believe in magic!

So I am with everyone else and usually say things like - What costume?!?!

I have not experienced this first hand but I would be pissed if someone said something like and my girls heard. They truly, truly believe that we are going to see Cinderella's castle and all the other Princesses and characters. (And we are, duh!) If someone stole their magic from them, b/c that is how I feel about it - they are stealing magic, I would have to say something. To me, believing in characters is an innocence that needs to exist in this world and I, for one, do not want my girls to lose it -- Ever!

It's not off topic...rather it's completely germaine to the OPs point about the magic being spoiled. Perhaps if you put as much effort into reading for content as you did into being the post-police, you'd have seen that.

To magicbob...thanks for the insider info. I found it relevant and very interesting:thumbsup2.

Well i have to say that my little 4 year old, would have turned around with her little finger out and told that person that
marie is a CAT! not a person.... and she has fur not a suit!:rotfl2:

now i know this b/c someone ( an older kid) tried to tell her that mickey was a person in a costume a few weeks ago....
i've never seen her whip her head around so fast in my life..
with the this mad look on her face and tell this kid ( about 9 i think) that mickey is mouse is not a person... and that if she didn't take back what she said.
my daughter was going to tell mickey when we went to WDW. :rolleyes1

the poor kids mother was laughing so hard.... I was so shocked. my mouth was hanging open..
I hate to think what will happen when christmas comes.. and those non-believers try to tell her Santa is not real... :rolleyes1

So as a warning for all you people that talk about the crazy idea the people are in suits at WDW....
please do not let my DD hear you or you will be getting an earful..

PS.. I believe... :santa:

Yeh I hate it when people refer to it as "a costume". I might sound crazy  but I'd rather be fully immersed in the 'magic' thanks!

I know what you mean... I once caught a mouse in my living room with one of those snapping traps, head came right off.

I have to say I was a little relieved. But Mickey, he's a different story.

I wonder how he recovered.

It might annoy me briefly but it would only really upset me if little kids were around.

All this "people in costumes" is crazy talk to me. I am a 35 year old Dreamer. Everything in Disney is magic and real. So yes, you can see a 5 foot mouse and he is real.

Now as for santa: My son was in 3rd grade last year and that is when the kids are "grown". Well, my son comes home from school and says "Mom do you believe that the kids in school are saying there is NO SANTA". I asked him "What he thought?" He said "There HAS to be a Santa, I catch him every year" (my hubby dresses up each year as Santa) I then told him "The kids that don't believe, don't receive anything from Santa. Because Santa won't go to their house, their parents have to buy their gifts and pretend it's from Santa". He was satisfied with that.

In my house my son gets 1 gift (the biggest and the best) from us and all the rest come from Santa.

Shoot, when my son (who is 9) losses a tooth I STILL put fairy dust (blue glitter) around his room and next to the money the tooth fairy leaves. Since the money is too heavy for her, she has to stop to rest. He will find fairy dust in different places that she has rested...on the desk, a trail by his lamp, on his book case then finally where the money is.

I say let your kids believe in magic as long as you can. I think children now a days have to grow up too fast and I don't know why. What harm can a little imagination do? I'm sure my son knows about the Disney characters being "real" but he hasn't let me know, he knows LOL I think he's letting me believe in magic as much as I am letting him believe.

That person can say it around my family, including my son. We don't even "do" the Santa myth (though he did have a 9 month period where he told me that he was *certain* that Santa did exist, but then he gave up on that...i never said anything otherwise, just talked about what HE believed), so there's no chance we'd do the characters-are-real stuff.

He's gone back and forth on his own. But even when he's in a "there's a person inside" mode, he will still wait patiently to meet Mickey or Buzz, etc etc, and is happy to hug them. Lots of magic without the forced belief in things that become ridiculous as soon as one is old enough to know what a *zipper* looks like (which happened at around 4.5 yo for DS).

I love your reply about Santa!! I am so going to tell my kids the same thing. I'm sure this will be the year that my daughter will push the Santa issue as she's 11. Our son is 6. I really don't want her spoiling anything for our youngest when she gets into a temper fit.

Great idea with the fairy dust! :thumbsup2

I totally agree!!

We all spend so much time immersed in "reality"-- Kids and adults! Homework, work, bills, activities, etc- it is absolutely pure heaven to be sucked into Disney Magic- where little fairies exist, princesses are kind, and a Mouse rules the kingdom. To have someone be "practical" and remind us that it isn't "real" is just irritating! Really, in real life there aren't barbershop quartets singing as we walk down the street, and photographers catching picture perfect moments???? I get it! Now- keep it to yourself!!!

As far as the big man himself- Santa- in our house, when you stop believing- your stop recieving!

I did say it to Donald without thinking. "Boy, you must be hot in there,' and he shook his finger back and forth - I caught on and said "underneath all those feathers!" I did not MEAN too, wasn't trying to spoil the magic for anyone, it slipped out because I was being nice but am more aware now! My DS knows it is a costume but I asked him wasn't it fun to have a little 'magic' and pretend? Who can't use a hug? He agreed. He's never really asked about the princesses though - after all there ARE princesses in this world and these characters ARE people! - makes it easier for him to believe. Still, at Disney we love to use the imagination - it IS all about the magic and pixie dust!

Kinda OT but not. A friend of our family has an old fire truck that he drives in parades. He often invites my daughter and I to ride off the back and throw out candy. On our first time doing this they were getting everyone all lined up. Our local hockey team the WICHITA THUNDER  was in the car behind us. Well this guys shows up and tells me your daughter might want to turn her head. She was 4 at the time so keeping her head turned for a long period of time was next to impossible. She turned around right in time to see THUNDER DOG put his head on. She was in shock through the whole parade. She had been to several hockey games before and loved Thunder Dog. She did however get several pics and lots of goodies like a hat, frisbee, thunder sticks and even a couple tickets to the game. She still thinks that she is in on some huge secret that only we know about Thunder Dog and she is now 10.
