Is Fort Wilderness really that good???

Planning a family trip to WDW for Oct. 3-9. We all really love camping, but I'm just not 100% sold on the idea of spending such a big vacation this way. We've never camped more than 4 nights at a time. And now I'm realizing that I can rent DVC points and stay in a deluxe villa that time of year for just a about the same price as it will cost us to camp! It's so tempting to just go with the DVC rental. But FW sounds like such a blast!! Help!!!!

It is that good. My wife thought I was crazy for wanting to "camp" on vacation. Now she won't do it any other way. I say go for it!

The differences are, IMHO immense, your in your own bed, you can take a leisurely evening stroll and see deer. Go sit on the beach at the Marina. Watch the fireworks from the beach etc,etc,etc, and you are always with people who enjoy the same as you.

Of course we've been living the RV lifestyle for 38 years. So for us if we have a choice, based on travel time, it will always be the FORT.

Once you camp at the fort your hooked!!! there is no other campground like it one of the few places that you can do as much or as little as you want, And always something going on, Camping at the fort is a five star place in our book!

I haven't stayed at the Fort since I was about 11. It made a big impression. I remember that being a fantastic trip, and most of the memories are from staying at the Fort. I won't lie it isn't always the most fun to get up and walk to pee in the middle of the night, but I don't think you're going to end up disappointed and you're kids will love it.

I'm hoping to give my kids the same memories because we're taking them this November.

In all of our trips to Disney, we, like you, could never have imagined camping while there...

until we did.

You know it's that good, when, you're not even finished your first trip to the fort and you're already planning your next one!!!!

Yes, it's THAT good!!!! (but, don't tell anyone as it's sometimes hard enough to get ressies as it is!)

Dont listen to these people...there just crazy.....Its over priced, its filthy, the staff is rude...I once asked the Security at the guardstation where Walmart was and she pulled me out of my truck and continuously slapped me for "trying to be funny"....it really hurt too! I took my kids to the "Campfire program starring Chip and dale" and there were huge rats roaming around with NO FEAR AT ALL of human interaction!!! people drinking and driving golfcarts like its NASCAR....all of the so called "campers" are in terrible moods because they cant afford a REAL vacation with a hotel room and all. Dont waste your time there....besides, you'd probably never beable to score a site anyway!! Disney acts like they are doing you a favor by letting you make a reservation there......its just awfull, in every aspect!!!



(ok...maybe there are a few lies in the above statement, but we gotta find SOMEWAY to ensure site availability, right?)

We go to WDW once or twice a year...for 12 years now. We often don't spend much time in the parks even though we have annual passes. Maybe a park every 2-3 days. We have stayed off site once and all the rest at FW We can participate in activities at the Fort, or not. We can wander around, ride our GC, watch TV or videos, go to the campfire, sleep late, or whatever we want to do. Since our kids are special needs and wheelchair bound, we don't use the pools, but they are available to those who want them. Volleyball, basketball, archery, playgrounds, dog parks... We can decorate our site as the season dictates. Fireworks from MK, water parade, carriage rides, fishing, whatever. We have our own beds, kitchen, and bathroom. The only place for our group.

BDR tells the truth. The Fort is the worst campground I've ever been to. It was so shockingly bad that I am returning in one week just to make sure I'm not imaging things.

I'd say it depends on what type of camping you do and what you enjoy. If I had the choice between a tent and Saratoga Springs, I have to admit DVC would win out. BUT, I would rather stay in my motorhome in a Full Hookup campsite than CL at the Grand Floridian! I LOVE the Fort, and my motorhome has pretty much all the comforts I desire on vacation... and the places it lacks are more than made up for by other things about the Fort!

We already have reservations for that same week and it will be our first time staying at FW. However, if Disney runs the free dining special for that week we will probably change to a moderate resort. I will be disappointed if that happens. We have been talking about staying at FW for 10 years.

They have the nerve to clean the comfort stations everyday. Then they have the nerve to vacuum the streets everyday. then they have the nerve to charge you up the (well you know what i want to say) and they even make you have a good time while you are there.

For us FW was an unfortunate choice for our first camping experience with our new RV two years ago. We are now getting ready to make our 8th trip to the Fort in 20 days. It has spoiled us for anyplace else. We have camped in a couple Florida State Parks and they have been nice. We took a trip to Chattanooga and it was good. We went to a family reunion at a great state park in northeast GA and it was beautiful. But for us NOTHING compares to FW. It is so much more than just camping and if you have been on this site for any length of time you will find the people are a big part of what FW is all about. From being friendly to other campers to the joy they show in their decorations FW will always be our camping destination of choice. IMO you can't do any better as a home away from home. And that is just what it feels like after your first trip.

The only place I like to stay when we are at WDW. My crazy 4 yr old can run and scream and swim and play and I can sit and have a drink and decompress all at the same time that dinner is finishing up in the crockpot.
