Is Disneybounding really popular? It is just a social media thing?

Disney-bound would mean going to Disney.

Adding an -ing does not IMHO make it a cutesy way to say dressing up. No one says "I'm collegebounding" - at least not that I've heard.

It's a play on the words based on their alternative meaning to your original comment about knowing it as a verb only (to bound as in to run with leaping strides). Happens all the time with language. Things morph to better encapsulate something.

It doesn't have to have the -ing (the modifier is not always required). Disney-bound or Disney bound yes, that is "going to Disney". But combining them into one word (Disneybound) has morphed into the descriptive word for "going Disney" or "going as Disney". It refers to both the noun (outfit; "My Disneybound is created using X, Y, and Z.") and as a verb (the action; "I'm going to Disneybound on my next trip.".

Language evolves and grows. You don't have to understand it. You don't have to participate. I was trying to help explain to you how the word evolved. And as this could easily get off topic continuing in circles with the same comments I will leave this as my final comments on explaining the grammar logic that caused it to spawn into existence.

Has to be more than just headgear as I understand it. Generally done with ordinary clothing in the colors the character typically wears.

The most fun ones are the "is it or isn't it" ones, imo. Like the woman I saw last trip with black hair with a red bow in front, royal blue puffy-sleeve blouse and long yellow skirt--definitely an "is." Then, there was a tall person with a lime green baseball cap, orange shirt and bluejeans. Goofy? Probably.
Definitely !!!
Subtle is best, otherwise you're just dressing up in a costume or uniform, etc.

I agree to a point. If I have a fair sense of who the character is, I'm happy. If it's just someone wearing red and black, I find that disappointing. Little clues are fun and help narrow things down. Wearing green? Give me a little more to go by so I get a hint of Peter Pan, or Tinkerbell, or the crocodile, or whatever lol.

If I remember right... The woman who first coined the term used to share pics of her outfits on like Pinterest or something when she was planning her Disney trips, and it would be like, "Disney bound next week and this is what I'm wearing" or "bound for disney" and then it just morphed into one phrase. People were doing it before that, but the term just caught on and stuck.

I don't think "cosplay" would work though, as that is actual costuming, and the whole point of Disneybounding is evoking a character without breaking the parks rules about costumes.
I'm starting to get it. I had zero clue on how bounding could be associated with this type of deal

But sometimes it might just be that someone wanted to wear red and black or green. Not intending to dress in the manner of a character.

These are great examples. I felt that I was fairly savvy when it came to all things Disney but apparently not! It will be fun to be on the lookout for this on our next trip.
Because I am a novice at this I will keep my compliments to myself lest I say to a 300lb guy in a red shirt and yellow shorts, "Hey Pooh Bear!" and then see the look in his eyes like WTH and end up with a black eye. Good times!

Peter Pan… has a hat with a feather too. :)

I met this really nice monthly-visiting bounder about thirty mins ago. She told me that she comes in different outfits every time.

Now that is a very cute outfit! Love the bag, too! Nice staging on your part, Rob…but I wouldn’t expect anything less from you, you have such a good eye for composition! Hope you had a better day today with Buzz…

Thank you! Much appreciated. Yes, today was markedly better. Got 2,095,600 on my second game! One more shot and my score would have exceeded 2,097,000 and it would have reset (as it did last weekend). Today has been fantastic. Met lots of cool/interesting people.

It's not new or just something influencers do. My 17 year old son has been doing it for at least 5 years. He just likes to dress in fun colors and enjoys trying to "be" a specific character with his color choices.

The most common characters I see people bounding as are Minnie, Snow White, and Pooh.

I definitely see a lot of those three, but I also see a LOT of Ariels (both before and after the new movie). I think because it's fairly simple to buy a green skirt/shorts and a purple top and it's VERY clear who you are supposed to be.

Also, the Marvel bounds have become more and more popular recently, I think. Lots of Lokis, Scarlett Witches, Captain Americas, Iron Mans these days.

We do it pretty subtlety - here's my daughter on the right "bound" as Black Widow. Close enough that it caught the Black Widow's eye and she came over to see the girls!

My daughter's wearing a shirt w/ the Black Widow symbol and an embroidered silhouette of a ballerina behind the symbol.... she noticed and talked to the girls (who are ballerinas). Love that she knows her character enough & her back story as a trained dancer back in Russia (for those in the know it's the Vaganova school) . She was awesome.

Great pic and great story! Helpful hint: you can edit the post (and also going forward) to insert the full image rather than a thumbnail. That way it displays larger in the window :-).
