Is Disneybounding really popular? It is just a social media thing?

I've seen many people bounding at Disneyland. Often it's just a color scheme, but some people wear more elaborate outfits. Not a full on costume, though. I think the idea is to represent the charatcer, not necessarily look just like them. I have an outfit for Sleeping Beauty that's a skirt and shirt the same colors as her "make it pink/make it blue" dress. My dd bounded as an obscure character from tangled last time we went.

So when you dress as such do ppl come up to you or do they acknowledge you with just a glance or a nod?

Here's a picture of me and my friends doing a combo of DBing and Dapper Day. We made some fabric using the old Club 33 plate pattern and my friends used it on a bodice and hat. I had the gold dress and I appliqued blue flowers on it (cut out from a dress I bought at a thrift store). We all used the blue and gold colors plus went vintage for Dapper Day. It was fun!

Most people don't even notice, or at least they don't say anything. I have had compliments from CMs, actually :)

I love this so much!!!!! 🥰

I’ll often speak with bounders and give them props on their outfits. Usually they’re exceptionally receptive, perhaps because most people don’t say anything.
This is pretty cool. I like the extra layers such as this to the Disney experience. Kinda like a long time ago in finding the hidden Mickey's.
Does anyone have some pictures of the subtle bounders out there?

I don’t know how this term “Disneybounding” was derived, probably off TikTok or some other thing, but I have dressed in character clothing for over 20 years. My friend and I dress in a different character every day of our trip, from Alice to Jack Sparrow to all the Avengers. Shoes, shirt, sometimes pants, Mickey ears, nails…all in a theme.

Cap even commented on my last outfit I wore for RTM day, complete with custom Cap and Bucky ears down to my Star-spangled fingernails!

Thats one of the best parts of trip planning is working on the outfits !

I've had some guests as well as CMs comment on my outfits and I try and acknowledge someone when I see them Disbounding.

On our March 2022 trip I was wearing my Snow White outfit and was rushing to get to Red Rose to pick up our food. I had clicked the "I'm here, prepare my food" button a little too early so I left the rest of our group to walk while I moved with a sense of urgency to the restaurant. When I got there, the CM at the door looked at me and said "Hey! Where are the 7 dwarfs?" To which I replied "If you fall behind, you get left behind and they have really short legs so I left them!" :rotfl:

I do it at one day a trip and def see others do it and we talk sometimes if we are in line.

Holy crap! I think I am more out of the loop than you. I have never heard the term "bounding" until today. When I have seen ppl apparently bounding, especially in Star Wars Land, I generally referred to them as "dressing up" or "cosplay.
I guess if I wore the X-Wing fighter pilot helmet that I purchased for the man cave I would have been bounding?? Yes?
I've heard the term, but I totally don't get it.

Dressing up or CosPlay makes sense.

Bounding just makes me think of a dog running across a field or something.

If I remember right... The woman who first coined the term used to share pics of her outfits on like Pinterest or something when she was planning her Disney trips, and it would be like, "Disney bound next week and this is what I'm wearing" or "bound for disney" and then it just morphed into one phrase. People were doing it before that, but the term just caught on and stuck.

I don't think "cosplay" would work though, as that is actual costuming, and the whole point of Disneybounding is evoking a character without breaking the parks rules about costumes.

Disneybounding has been going on at Disneyland for a long time! My friend and I bounded as Anna on DCL's inaugural Iceland cruise in 2015, but it was at Disneyland well before that :) This pic was from the frozen deck party leaving Akureyri--hard to believe this was nine years ago (until I look in the mirror, LOL).

I stated it earlier in the thread, but it was coined in 2011 so the term predates TikTok by several years.

But also yes, the concept of Disneybounding (and any other sort of bounding) without the term has existed for decades.

Thanks, Lisa. I had also wondered where the term came from, as I couldn't think of a usage of the word "bound" that would apply. As you say, it's good to have a term that makes it clear that one isn't talking about a full-on costume.

I totally missed this! Sorry, Lisa24jks!

Yes, it was a woman named Leslie Kay and her blog she started back in 2011. She called the blog DisneyBounding and the name has stuck ever since then. She didn't invent the concept of bounding (although some do try to credit her with that), but she did coin/popularize the term 12 years ago.

Also agreed. Cosplay is very different as it focuses more on looking like the character rather than being inspired by them. Definitely some grey area depending on the character, of course, and some things could cross into being actual cosplay, but in general they are very different.

Bound used as an adjective means intending to go. So like "college-bound" means going to college.

Disneybounding literally means "going Disney".
Disney-bound would mean going to Disney.

Adding an -ing does not IMHO make it a cutesy way to say dressing up. No one says "I'm collegebounding" - at least not that I've heard.
