Is Delta as bad as reported?

Hi everyone. Hoping for some input into how good Delta is. We are planning to go from Melb to LA and were not impressed by Virgin at all. But Qantas is $300 each more than Delta.

Anyone flown Delta that can compare it to the others? We will be flying onto NY, but using points that we can redeem on Delta, but having doubts if the savings would be worth it.

Have read a few negative things about Delta, cancelling flights etc. so any info on leg room, and generally honest reviews would be great. Thanks.

I would fly Delta over Qantas any day of the week, if they flew direct out of Melbourne they would also be my choice over Virgin. As for legroom, you can pay an extra $150 each way to get 'economy comfort' seats that give you much more space- at 6ft tall I need all the legroom I can get. I thought the crew on each flight were really friendly and no complaints about the food. I've just done a LA to SFC leg with them a few days ago and the plane was full but they got everyone sorted and boarded quickly and we went on time, actually I don't think I've ever had a Delta flight leave more than a few minutes late, maybe I'm just lucky like that (I've also never struck a rude person in customs at LAX and only took 10min to clear customs on this trip)

We recently flew Delta from Nova Scotia to Fort Lauderdale, with no complaints, and some compliments! We had a wretched itinerary, leaving Halifax around 3 pm, flying into NYC, then to Atlanta, and on to Fort Lauderdale, ETA just before midnight. A storm was blowing hard on departure day and we saw early in the morning that our first flt was going to be delayed, which would have resulted in missing connections, etc. I called Delta and an extremely pleasant gentleman booked us onto a flt which left NYC a bit later and went straight to FL. YAY!

We did get separated from our luggage, but were reunited in the morning, and we found the people at the baggage counter very pleasant, and the online tracking very efficient.

The planes were the usual "cozy" quarters, however, nowhere near as bad as those used by WESTJET (aka WORSTJET) where you don't even have room to feel human anymore. I'd definitely fly with Delta again, but will avoid WestJet!

We flew them twice on this last trip first flight :thumbsup2 we missed our flight due to the time it took in customs they just put us on the next one no charge :)
Second flight lax-Syd the check in staff were awful and I really mean awful they couldn't confirm DH's status with VA kept telling us it wasn't him even though we had already used it on our first flight it took them 40 mins to sort it out then they tried to check us only to Syd when we asked for our bags to be checked to Perth as our ticket said they reluctantly did but threatened us that with only 8 mins left of check in time that we would not be allowed on the flight if we wanted our bags checked to Perth which we did and they got it done just.
The actual flight itself was great the food was the best we have had for the meals alcohol was just beer and wine. Entertainment was better than virgins except for the Japanse subtitles on movies and we paid for economy comfort which was worth every cent to be able to stretch out in saying all that we still chose VA for our trip next year even though Delta was $50 each cheaper as we can pick the extra legroom without charge on VA :)

thanks for the input, the price says Delta from Melbourne operated by Virigin, so my guess is a connection in Sydney or Brisbane. We really like the A380 on qantas, and hated Virgin seats, so hesitant about Delta, but this info is great.

If it says operated by Virgin, it's a Virgin flight not Delta.

We flew Delta to Orlando in April/May this year and it was great...no troubles at all. We had a delayed flight on the way back from Orlando so we would miss our connecting flight in LA back to Sydney ... They tried to bump us on a flight with United but there wasn't enough time .. We just had to stay in LA for a night and catch the next flight but it was still a great flight and no troubles.
W are flying them again next time

Someone told me there was no inflight entertainment on Delta. It seems I have mis-informed?

Last year we flew home via Delta (booked on VAustralia site) as they were the cheaper option. My only complaint was we and a couple of other families booked the bassinet seats and they ended up being over booked. We were then assigned a middle seat, which after a few trips to the desk in LA finally got a window seat (I like baby girl to me enclosed lol) in the very last row and we were all good :) The family in front of us however made quite a scene about it and complained to every person they came across the entire trip...and scored a free bottle of wine and complimentary frequent flyer points for doing so...knew I should have been more rude lol But the flight was good, food was good, entertainment was good...it was good (minus annoying family in front) :)

I talked to my travel agent about Delta and she said she hears bad things from time to time but usually not so bad and they're priced so competitively that people still tend to overlook.

Personally the first time I flew with them we had a 6 hour delay during which there was no guarantee at all about if the flight would leave at all and then when we did finally arrive we were told incorrect information about our bags twice until it turned out they were in Atlanta (they thought.. couldn't say for sure) after about an hour and a half of waiting at the baggage carousel and being ignored by Delta staff who knew there were no more bags coming. There was also a time when for no apparent reason they changed our seats and moved my fiance and I into different rows and wouldn't allow us to change it back until we got to the gate (and even that was a maybe).

All other flights with them have been with trepidation but without incident. If they're priced well enough I'd just say cross your fingers. We do. Also they definitely have inflight entertainment and inflight wifi too on every service I've used.

If you decide to book with delta make sure that you are completely sure that you have the dates you want and will not change them. I booked with Delta for my last holiday to orlando just over a year ago as it was the cheapest option (flying from new zealand). Just before my trip my travel agent advised me that delta had cancelled my connecting flight in australia and that i would have to get on the next one which left 12 hours later. They would not let me go through a different airport to avoid the long stop over. I decided to change my date and fly the day before (which according to my terms and conditions would cost be "from" 400 dollars) so i decided i would do that but when they got back to me with a price to change my flights it was 1200 dollars to fly the day before (which was the exact same price as buying a whole new one way airfare). I cancelled and booked with air new zealand. I cannot comment on the plane or the trip and this is only my experience but just be aware that they are not very accommodating when it comes to any change to your original booking.

Hi, we flew 4 times on Delta whilst in the states last Sept, I can honestly say we had no problems at all with any of the flights, and the Delta crews we had on all our flights were fantastic.
The only gripe is they seem not to worry with the hand luggage, omg could not believe the stuff that was being put up in the overhead lockers, really thought the plane wasn't going to get off the ground a few times. It was quite comical a few times, watching people shoving and pushing bags and then just leaving them half hanging out cause they wouldn't fit.
The flight attendants then had to juggle bags around, to get the lockers closed.
I actually had a go at this guy , cause we had our "small" bags in the locker and then he decided he wanted to try and get his in, I just said excuse me, I think it is full and you better not break anything in my bag!!!
He just looked at me and then proceded to shove the suitcase onto the top of someone elses bag, in the locker opposite, mind you him and his wife had 3 suitcases for hand luggage!!
Oh and the coffee was like drinking tar, but had to have a few cups a couple of times to wake me up.

I hear the united business class product isnt too shabby...and well within budget...

:surfweb: interesting times indeed

If I ever travel solo, I'll keep it in mind. When I'm paying for 3 tickets, I do the value for money and sardine things.
