Is "country fried steak" really steak? Is meatloaf meat?

I've always been a fan of country fried steak....we had it just the other night....and I began to ponder "what actually is country fried steak"?

Is it a particular cut of beef or is it a man-made mystery meat?

Why we're on the subject, which part of the cow does the "meatloaf" come from?

When we make chicken fried steak, we use top round steak... very thinly sliced and tenderized =) YUM

When I make meatloaf, I use lean ground beef, A1 sauce, bread crumbs, and an egg or two. So its mostly meat.

Well, it is beef. From what part of the cow, I have no idea.

If you're buying it at the grocery to make at home, it's usually labelled "cubed steak" although I don't know why...it's not cubed! It looks like ground beef that's been formed into patties, but it cooks up different. Maybe they're from different parts of the cow?....

its made from cube steak, which when you look at resembles little teeny tiny cubes from the tenderzing hammer thingy. Although it looks alot like ground beef, its actually one piece.

its round steak that they run through a machine called a meat cuber. It puts little cube shaped holes in it!! You can also buy thin sliced round steak and cube it yourself with a meat mallet. I love country fried steak, but don't eat it very often because of all the gravy and grease!!

Around here they call it "chicken fried steak" which is really weird because there is certainly no chicken in it. I think it refers to the fact that it is fried in a skillet the same way you can fry chicken.
