Is combining (merging) of reservations automatic?

We have an 8-day trip planned. Days 1-3 and 5-8 were booked on 2 separate reservations. Day 4 was waitlisted and it just came through. We now see the entire 8-day trip on 1 reservation. When the waitlist filled, there were 3 reservations which they obviously merged into one. Was the combining (merging) of the 3 reservations into one done automatically? Or did MS manually do it?

And, if the first 2 reservations were different in some way from the waitlisted one (such as occupants with added middle initial, or DDP added on), would they have merged all 3?

It's hit or miss. They might merge them or they might not. If they do, they'll cancel DDP is my understanding just like if you match a wait list.

They did when I had 2 reservations and the last night came on waitlist.

I have never had them combine automatically if they didn't do it when filling the waitlist. Just call or send a message asking for it to be done. If something was different on the reservations then they probably shouldn't even when filling the waitlist but they still might.

It was done for me automatically. If you don't want your reservations merged (for dining plan purposes, for example), you could put one reservation in the name of a travel companion.

Unless one does something that can't be combined (different resort, villa size or booking category), there's no way to guarantee they won't be combined. Different names doesn't necessarily guarantee thy won't combine but does change the odds.
