Is Blue Bayou overrated?

There have been several times when I thought about making time for BB while we are at DL, but when I read personal accounts of people who go there, I just get the impression that it's overrated.

We are a family of 6 (kids range in age from 3 to 16)...is BB a must do, or is it no biggie?

well heres what we decied we want to go one reason to get some pics inside and becosue we as a family havent been. so were doing dessert there now.

we will get the monto cristo at cafe orlens.

I say it's worth doing once. It's also only worth it to us if we wait for a water table (not sure if they seat 6 at those tables though?). The atmosphere is really nice. We enjoyed our meal, but didn't find it to be very special, or maybe worth the price we paid. But we're glad we did it once.

It depends on where you sit, and your waiter. I've been a couple of times. I've found the closer to the water I am, the more I like it. Once i was tucked away in the corner and it was just awful.

The food isn't bad (i like the peppered steak and the chicken). It is very pricey, but we always split our meal and share dessert and it's the perfect amount.

I don't really go often, but i love getting to go with people for their first visit, it makes it feel new and magical to me again.

So it can be overrated- but I still think it is worth going once. Get the first reservation for that time (11:30 i think for lunch and either 3:45 or 4:00 for lunch) and then show up about 20-30 minutes early and ask for a waterside table :)

and don't pass on the cookie boat!

thanks for the feedback! i think we'll go ahead and skip it. i wouldn't want to go unless we got a water table, either, and if it's tough to find room for 6 at those, then it just wouldn't be worth it to me.

on the other hand, we can ride POTC as much as we want, and get exactly the ambiance we're looking for, so we'll just stick with the ride, lol. :)

We're a family of 5 (2 5-year-olds, an 8-year-old, dh and me). Not huge eaters, so we share and dh orders an appetizer (crab cakes). We love the atmosphere and fun!! Last year, we enjoyed it so much we made an impromptu reservation for the next evening for dinner, especially since we discovered we spent quite a bit less there than at the burger place. Splitting a meal was quite a lot of food! We split a Monte Cristo 4 ways, lol--the sandwich is divided into 4 triangles and with a couple of sides it is plenty of food for my girls and me. We ordered mint juleps and the girls wore their pirate hat menus while pretending to be swashbucklers. They got gold coins (chocolate) at the end of the meal, which were a big hit.

It's not for everyone, but we love it!! I will be honest with you--I don't find much of the food at DL "worth it," but I truly enjoy BB because of the atmosphere and would choose it over pretty much anywhere else.

I should add that in 5 years, we have always gotten a water table, every time. We go in October.

While I think that BB is somewhat overrated by those who are looking for a gourmet dining experience, if you are looking to get a decent meal in a beautiful setting, you won't be disappointed.

That being said, I would make a mid afternoon reservation and do dessert only. The cookie boat is fantastic and fun, and I really like the creme brulee trio too. You get all the ambiance without the major price tag if you order 2-3 desserts to split amongst your party of 6.

The last time I was there we were a party of 9 and had a waterside table, so don't let others scare you away.

We've been twice in about 10 trips.

The first time was, well, because we had never done it before.

The second time, because we didn't know you could get a monte cristo anywhere else.

We won't go back....at least I don't see it. Its way too over priced for the quality of food.

I had to LOL when I called Disney Dining last week. I made reservations for several different places for October. He asked me if I wanted BB....I said "no thank you". He went on and on how smart I was since it was such a waste of money and the food wasn't "all that". We had a pretty funny conversation about places he would take his dates growing up and how he always avoided that place.

Anyways, just my 2 cents.

my dh said 9dollers for a dessert are you nuts lol but we will still do it

It is completely over rated food wise. Downtown Disney restaurants offer much better food for less. I would suggest getting a ressie for later in the evening and just having desert. It is wayyy easier to get a ressie at 9:00 on, and the cookie boat is enough for two! The last two times weve been we got waterside without even asking. Us and the kids have had some great times having a late ice cream cookie boat there after a long day. It doesnt get better than that!:thumbsup2

It is worth doing once we do it every time we go now.

Is it expensive yes but what isn't at disneyland you have spent the money to get there might as well enjoy what else they have.

I think downtown disney is over rated the food prices is just as bad as in the park.

I really liked the fantasmic dessert seating I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I have been very fortunate when dining at the Blue Bayou, for my appetizer, entrée and desert have always been delicious.
A tad bit pricey? yes, but then, I already knew that, so I was not surprised by the menu.
It is not difficult to be seated at waterside, I arrived @30 minutes early, and in less than 10 minutes I was seated. The only element that bothered me, was seeing more than a few scalawags, taking flash pictures while sailing down the bayou!

hmmmmm.....maybe i'll think about doing a dessert there, then. if we could get enough seating near the water, i would kind of like to try it out. if we do the dessert, then we won't feel like we wasted too much money if it turns out we didn't think BB lived up to the hype. the park will be closing at 8pm on both days of our trip, but maybe we could do the late afternoon thing.

thanks again for the feedback!

Gisele,
Where's your TR???

P.S. My two cents: The BB was definitley the HIGHLIGHT of our trip this summer. We had the BEST time there. It's a great place that is not going to be matched for ambiance ANYWHERE.

Hope you change your mind!

I think it really depends on what you are looking for in going there.

We love it.

The atmosphere is cool.
It's different.
It's fun knowing you are "inside" Pirates.

I personally love eating at the Blue Bayou. We have gone for birthdays, anniversaries, with out of town friends, and "just because."

I wouldn't skip it, but I've been there. LOL :wizard:

i honestly think you're paying more for the experience and the atmosphere, than the food. it's always nice watching boats of random people glide by as you sit eating dinner after a long day..

but yeah.. like people have said... its nice to try it once... and after, see what you think of it.

It was worth every penny and the atmosphere was so real. I really felt like I was seating by a real bayou. From the fireflies flying around to the crickets chirping. The food was to die for, the prime rib was awesome and the cookie boat was so cute.
