Is applying a "quick coat" of nail polish appropriate at work?

I voted no, but is it OK at lunch time? I have some co-workers that cook smelly fish things at lunch time, so if someone wanted to do their nails, is that worse?

Ewwww yuck lunchtime smells are WAY worse than nail polish smell.

I really don't care if a coworker touches up her nails. I can't recall it ever happening, but I can't imagine caring.

Not at your desk during business hours, no. I painted my nails during lunch once. Our lunchroom is in the basement of the building and I was the only one there at the time.

No. But I'm a goody two-shoes and didn't even DIS or make personal calls while on the clock. (I work for myself now, so I can do all sorts of inappropriate things "at work"!)

Aside from the smell and the whole "using company time for a personal activity" thing - it just doesn't look right. If I saw an employee painting her nails I'd think a)she doesn't have enough work to do; b)she has no interest in the work she is supposed to do; and or c)she has so little respect for her coworkers that she is going to groom herself while they do the work.

I don't think it is appropriate in an office with cubicals. Most people would not enjoy the smell during business hours.

i have painted both my fingernails and toenails while at lunch (toenails only because they were chipped and I was wearing sandals.) However, I have worked with a couple different people who thought it was okay to paint their fingernails on the teller line. This is totally unacceptable. customers should not walk up and see someone painting their nails. I think it is very unprofessional. It reminds me of those teenage movies where the clerk is on the phone, painting her nails and popping her gum while rolling her eyes that someone bothered her.

I would say unacceptable but that's just me because I suffer from migraines and nail polish is a trigger sometimes if I'm on the border of one. If you have private space (not near customer interaction) and none of your co-workers cares, go for it.


Stinky lunches are a whole other conversation EEEWWWWWWWW. Of all the stinky stuff co-workers have warmed up around here, someone had the nerve to complain about the smell of my popcorn!

I put "other". I think it really depends on where you work, what you do, and how much time/effort you're putting in to doing your nails. If your just painting one finger (emergency repair/touch-up) and you don't work with the public, sure, why not.

If you're a receptionist in a busy office and you're doing a full set, then no, not acceptable.

Everything in between, it just really depends on the individuals work situation.

Oh you can't make popcorn here. 1)People complain about the smell. 2)The same people who complain about the smell eat all the popcorn.

i have a pretty large office with a door. my desk is about 10 feet from the door.

i would (and have) apply nail polish at work since i can close my door and the fumes don't migrate to the hallway.

however, in a cube farm, no way would i do it.

I am a supervisor and if any of my staff thought this was appropriate I would be very annoyed.

They get an hour for lunch, if they want to use it to 'beautify' themselves then they can go ahead but not on my time!

I voted no, if only for the fumes. Plus, it does not send a very good message to any upper management types who might be walking through the department at any given time. Not to mention any clients who may drop by. Let's face it, you can DIS and work at the same time (DIS while compiling reports, answering email, formatting spreadsheets, etc.). There is no way you can paint your fingernails and work at the same time.

while you can't paint and work, the painting only takes a few seconds. there are plenty of work things i can do while one hand dries.
