Is anyone on the Dream right now? How did a girl fall overboard?

Here's the quote that makes me roll my eyes at the mother.

"'She provided me with a picture of [the girl] laying in a porthole with a window on it,' the report stated."

Yes. We have all seen the windows INSIDE the ship with the padded benches. Those are CLEARLY windows. And the actual rail on the ship is so different to those. Absolutely no way any sane person paying the slightest bit of attention could look at the ones on the promenade deck and say "Yeah. That's the same as the ones inside." There's clearly framing all around the ones inside that you can actually sit/lay in for pictures.

I understand the idea of not wanting to traumatize the child further and not feeling it is a case they can "win" (to what end) but I do wish DCL would come out and ban the mother for a period of 5 years as well as a fine. There has to be some consequence to endangering your child on the ship (apparently multiple times).

No parent is perfect. I am not perfect but sometimes mistakes or poor judgement comes with consequences. We cannot expect our children to grow into adults who take accountability for their actions if we are not modeling that by accepting negative repercussions when we mess up.

There is a current viral video of teens on a Royal ship dangling off balconies as they cross from one to another. My opinion is that the parents should be banned from sailing for 5 years. Teens and kids do risky behavior, I get that, but parents need to understand they are responsible for them and need to watch them or deal with the consequences if they participate in dangerous stunts like that.

Parents in both of these situations are fully responsible for their minors.

I also believe the cruise industry needs their own version of the no fly list. A No Sail list that keeps you not off one line but all the cruise lines if you are banned. No hopping from cruise line to cruise line when bad behavior or judgement gets you kicked off of one.

Do you really think this family would go on a cruise ever again? After their child fell into the water and could’ve died? I wouldn’t be able to ever go on any boat, or go near an ocean, ever again.

I swear sometimes I think TikTok exists only to eliminate the younger generation. Between this and subway surfing it's ridiculous. If only there was some way to ban videos of dangerous things like that.

There were no Tide Pods when I was little, but even without the internet, or maybe because of the absence of it, I still knew you shouldn’t eat laundry detergent.

I partially blame their parents for some of the stunts pulled by stupid teens these days. I would be willing to bet those boys on the balconies have parents who never let them suffer consequences for bad choices as a toddler, and protected them from even the smallest mishap, which generally results in teens who genuinely have no idea that bad choices can have bad results. And yes, I’m part of the no helmet on your bike, no seatbelts in the car, come back when the street lights come on generation. But I learned early that if you do something dumb, you could hurt yourself. Yes, my parents kept me from doing anything seriously harmful when I was a kid, and enforced standards of behaviour, but they let me fall sometimes when I needed the lesson. You quickly learn not to jump your bike over homemade ramps after the first case of road rash.

I just think that kind of response, showing a porthole window inside the ship with glass and acting like it is the same as a deck area on the ship with porthole shaped openings, is just duplicitous.

I wonder in a situation like that if we are even aware of how much rationalization we are doing. She could have genuinely believed that, she could be lying to avoid getting charged, or she may have subconsciously convinced herself that she believed it as a way to cope with guilt. That's all pure curiosity and I'm not taking a side or advocating that any of the possibilities I just listed is the correct one.

I wouldn't think as a parent that I would place my child on a railing for a photo so I have no idea what sort of thinking these people have- But it's not judgment I would rely on.

I understand that Disney would not want the backlash but honestly, they don't need to ban the hero dad they just need to ban the mother who placed her up there and the reason for doing that is to send a strong message that parents are responsible for their actions on the ship and the actions of their children.

Royal should absolutely be banning the parents of the teens who were caught hanging from the balconies.

It's about making the consequences severe enough that other people will not also have such lapses in judgment

It is very likely that the mother has been banned from Disney ships. It is equally likely that Disney will not release any further statements about the case even if there have been consequences issued. Releasing a statement would only add publicity and give people (many of whom have never cruised on a Disney ship) more opportunity to talk about how unsafe cruises must be if a child could fall off.

DCL will typically share information about punishments only with those affected.

In the most recent subway surfing death here in NYC, the girls were 12/13 and snuck out of their homes at like 2/3 in the morning. One of the girl's mother found out when the girl's sister saw a news report and said "Isn't that her skateboard?" (It had very distinctive stickers on it.) She didn't even realize the girl wasn't in the house!

You'd think death would be a severe enough consequence, but multiple subway surfing deaths haven't deterred anyone yet.

Teens brains are wired to take more risks, they do not have a fully formed frontal lobe. Therefore it is up to us as their parents and guardians to keep them safe (even from themselves sometimes). That means we (I have a teen myself) as parents have to be aware of where they are and what they are doing and hopefully instilling some good judgement along the way and that we have made them deal with smaller negative consequences (like missing that field trip if you forget the permission slip) so that they understand that they will not be able to get away with anything.

Do I see DCL publicly commenting? Nope.

But I do think they should take a hard stance on this as should Royal. These hard stance messages are meant for the parents who do have fully formed frontal lobes who too often go on a trip or vacation and do not watch their children or decide an photo for FB or Instagram is worth putting their child on a rail. It is meant to be a warning and a reminder.

Will some parents still not watch their children or think a photo is more important than safety? Probably but if it causes one more parent to choose differently that is still important.

Thoughts:

2) Disney probably will not risk banning them outright. But, will probably reach a settlement where they pay for the family's silence and have them agree not to return. The media attention has been huge, and Disney will get hammered even if they are right here. Clickbait headlines write themselves "Disney bans hero dad, mom says safeguards inadequate." Even if only 20% side against Disney, the harms are huge to Disney's brand here.
sure, lets pay the mother for almost killing her child. Why? It's too late to pay them to be silent and what's the benefit to Disney to ban them if it costs them money AFTER they have publicly blamed Disney?

Though with this report and a detective saying that basically anyone with a brain can tell there is no glass, the "blaming of Disney" holds no water. Which, I suspect, is why the report was made public.

Again, where does it say that she put the girl up there? I believe she told her daughter to get in the frame, and I do truly believe she wrongly assumed there was a window. Personally, I told my kids they couldn’t get within a foot of the railings, because I have a real fear of heights, I also don’t see well, had 20/20 vision until somewhat recently, my kids made me go for an eye exam, I do not have even close to 20/20 vision anymore. I still need to pick up my glasses. I would not be able to tell if an opening had glass or not. I still wouldn’t allow my kids to sit there even with glass, I’m just too paranoid and would be afraid it would break.

You do realize that subway surfing has been going on for many decades, way before the internet and cellphones.

A parent on the walking path, with no glass, who had taken photos with glass and should be EASILY able to tell the difference and they either helped, allowed, or encouraged her daughter to sit on the rail. It is not just vision and I am certain you could tell it was open if you did not have your glasses. You can feel the wind and the hear the air in that spot. The only sense that is failing here is common sense- not someone's poor vision.

ETA- Also there is this line from the article "The mom later told officers she had taken several other photos of her daughter on the ship’s railings during the trip."- Railings are not porthole windows.

I am not shocked at all. If you are clueless enough that you think it’s a good idea to perch your kid on a cruise ship railing, you are clueless enough to convince yourself it’s someone else’s fault your kid fell overboard.

Some people should not be given responsibility for a house plant, let alone a child.
AND she said she had taken multiple pictures on railings around the ship! Unbelievable!

it says she "encouraged her daughter to get up on the railing" and "The mom later told officers she had taken several other photos of her daughter on the ship’s railings during the trip."
