is anyone here a medical technologist?

Yes! However, I have not worked in the field for several years.

If you don't want lots of patient contact, enjoy working with technology & co-workers, it is a great health field career. I loved it! Body fluids are really not gross and the work it not boring. You could also become a specialist in many areas. Your career opportunities are nation-wide and even international. You are not just limited to hospital and clinical labs but you also have possibilities in medical product sales. If you want to relocate, you have a decent chance of finding work.

My sister is one, well was one, now she's the lab supervisor. She's been one for about 30 years.

I'm an MLT certified by ASCP since 1993. (Medical Lab Tech, certified by American Society of Clinical Pathologists)

Interest in the lab has increased since the advent of shows like C.S.I. and other forensics shows. I worked in a hospital stat lab, a research lab and outpatient lab. I work in research now. A lab degree is a great stepping stone to work in research. I like it a lot, and body fluids don't bother me at all, obviously. I'm also a very skilled phlebotomist.
The only downside is that if you are fresh out of school, you may not get the shift you want. The only jobs you may be able to get for awhile may be night shifts or weekend shifts, but you have to take what you can get to gain experience.

You ought to contact ASCP.org for more info.

i was also interested in phlebotomy too goofygirl, thats a seperate certification right? did you just go and get 2 certifications?

also what is the difference between MT and MLT? cause i think the major certification track at my college is MT.

My sister had to have a 4 year degree plus an additional internshipp to be considered a medical technologist. She also had to be certified as a phlebotomist but now her lab is located outside the hospital so she doesn't do draws anymore. They phlebotomists that do out patient draws for them only have to have a GED plus a short certification.
