I'm sitting here trying to think of some adjectives to describe this movie.
Bizarre, definitely. I wasn't sure how I would feel about a film where the main character was wearing a weird looking, grimacing mask. It didn't take away from the film at all, if anything it made it more interesting.
There are raging political undertones in V for Vendetta, they may make even the most loyal right winger feel sqeamish.
Of course, it's set in future England, but the politics certainly mimic what many Americans feel we are facing.
It's a very profound story, and disturbing. England is under the leadership of a radical Christian leader. It is illegal to own a Koran. Illegal to be homosexual. Illegal to ask questions or protest.
There is a curfew, and all privacy and personal rights of citizens no longer exist.
The U.S.A is briefly mentioned, and it was described in such a way that reminded me of modern day Russia- a once great superpower collapsed.
One of the biggest focuses is how the government took control because the people were terrified into submission by the threat of terrorism.
Two things I found to be very brave (or stupid, depending on your views) of the film makers:
There is a puppet news channel that seems to be modeled after FOX, down to a rude, arrogant host that looks remarkable like Bill O'Reilly.
The second in command in the government looks like Dick Cheney and I would bet on the fact that the actor studied and emulated him.
I don't want to mention anything else and give things away.
Lastly, Natalie Portman was amazing. I'm not sure that there is another actress in this world who could have pulled that role off.
I would highly recommend it.
