Is a 13 yo girl too old for an American Girl Doll?

My 12 year old hasn't played with the 2 she has in well over a year.

My DD12 "displays" hers but hasn't touched them in about a year or more.

My DD10 will occasionally play with hers - change outfits, etc. - but in spurts and have gone 3-4 months without touching hers sometimes.

Their time for playing with dolls and AG dolls in particular seem over.

However, DD10 still LOVES to play with "toys" like LPS. She builds "villages" with books, cups, board games, nick-naks, etc on our large coffee table and her LPS roams around in the mess. When I tell her to clean up, she complains that she spent HOURS "setting up" and didn't get a chance to play in her village "creation" with her LPS figurines yet.

DD12 has moved onto electronic gadgets like MP3 players and nooks and her new cell phone.

If the 13 year old has always wanted one, then no. It would be a special gift whether she played with it or not, but I think most 13 year old girls view themselves as too old for dolls.

Yes. I have 3 daughters ages 14, 12 & 10 and none of them will play with them anymore Even the 12 year old, who was a huge AG fan at one time, won't play with them.

I bought DD her last one around 13, she went to the AG store for her birthday and got Kit, it was her 6th doll. She has them sitting on display in the spare room. She got her first one at around 8 and didn't really play with them other than dressing them anyway. If your DD wants one, get it...I bought one for myself! Kids are presured to grow up too fast these days.

She doesnt have any? I dont think I would want to "invest" the money in them at this point. I would assume a 13th yr old would be asking for an electronic item..... BUT, I would feel awful not getting my child what they "want" for their birthday. I don't know! I hope she changes her mind..

No. she doesn't have any. She was never into dolls particularly. Even as a little girl she preferred "rescue heroes" to "barbies." She went to the American Girl store with a girlfriend this week and came back begging for a doll. Apparently they spent 2 hours in the store and she loved it.

My DD is 13 and still loves her American Girl dolls. They are all on display in her room. She changes their outfits and styles their hair. I love that she is still into them at her age! Heck, I'm into them too! Some of those outfits, just too adorable!

I would buy it for her. Last year we went to a family wedding and my dd's(9 and 11) and their two college age cousins and many of the adults went for lunch. The college age girls who had them when they were little even brought their dolls. I tend to find that if I buy my kids what they ask for they are much happier than if I buy them something I think they would rather have

DD13 (14 next month) played with her AG dolls up until a few months ago, when we cleaned out her room and she realized how much room she could have WITHOUT the dolls in there and she decided she wanted us to store them. if she wanted a new AG doll, we'd probably buy her one.

My 12 year old would give you that eye roll that only tweens can do at the suggestion of a doll. My 7 year old, otoh, would be in heaven! But it depends on the child. At 13 she's old enough to make decisions about her presents. I'd probably give her the money and take her pick out a present. If she gets the doll, fine and if she gets distracted in the electronics store that's fine too!

If my dd was 13 and asking for an AG doll I would buy it for her. Doesn't seem strange at all to me.

My 12yo DD plays with hers every day and we are constantly picking up new things. We don't mind the investment because we have a new DD and I am pregnant again. None of her friends admit they play with Barbies or AG but when they come here they always end up playing with both. I think kids are forced to grow up too fast and are embarrassed to be kids.

My soon to be 12-year old still plays with hers. I just gave her Kanani a couple months ago and she loves her. I would assume that it really depends on the girl.

I see that your DD has asked for one. In that case, get it for her even if she only wants to display her.

Absolutely I'd buy it if she wanted it! I wouldn't expect her to sit and play with it for hours on end, but they are beautiful displayed. If she spent two hours at the store and loved it, that in itself would be worth part of the purchase price to experience that with you!

I don't think it's strange at all. If she is asking for it I would buy it. Most girls her age probably would like to play with dolls but don't because of peer pressure. AG dolls aren't like other dolls. They are meant to be played with, and when that time is over it's still fun to display them.

I don't think it's strange at all either. I have a almost 13 year old and even though she doesn't play with hers anymore like she use to she still loves them and has them in her room. Like the other poster said....Girls are pressure to act older than they are.....and I appreciate the fact that my daughter still enjoys them. Also these dolls are not like most "little girl "dolls and if you are still unsure go to the AG store with her and who knows you may end up enjoying them yourself
