Is 4 years old too young for Universal?

I'm torn between doing a Disney trip or going to Universal for the first time for any of us. My boys love all the Superheroes(Spider-Man, hulk), and me and my boys (ages 4&8) love Harry Potter. DH doesn't care he just says one or the other. We have about 4 days to spend and honestly I think US might be cheaper. What do you all think?

I can imagine taking a littler kid there, because of all the neat things there are for them to do (like the ball play area back behind the Curious George water play area...or the Curious George water play area for that matter!), but I would want to really prep him for things he might not be able to go on. So check the Universal website for the height requirements, most definitely.

Nice thing about Universal is that their baby swap is inside the ride. Families don't have to split apart until shortly before seating.

I think you would enjoy USO. While the younger one may not ride on everything, there are usually lots of characters to see and there are play areas and shows that I think your boys would enjoy. Check the website for height requirements, and see what rides and shows your kids are interested in. Can always you tube to see what the rides look like. You can always take the castle tour to see the cool features in the castle at your leisure.

If you stay on site, you get a beautiful hotel, with nice pools (free pool hopping between the 3 onsite hotels), free boat ride or short walk to the parks, free unlimited express pass, and early HP land entry. You can always check the packages to see if pricing with the neighbor hotels is what price you are looking for. With the neighbor hotels, you will get you early HP land entry, but not unlimited express pass.

Most of us would recommend buying tickets and room separately. Unlike WDW, USO does not own the on site hotels. Check directly with the hotel for prices. Discounted tickects can be had at AAA and a website called Undercovertourist (an authorized seller of USO tickets). Undercovertourist sends you real tickets with no shipping charges. Also, if you think you may want an AP, you can always use the APH code in the hotel promo code box, and see what the AP rates are. Only 1 AP is needed to get the discounted hotel room rate. The AP holder can also purchase discounted tickets at the hotel and get 10 percent off most food and store purchases in the park, and some in citywalk.

I find the parks easier to navigate, and not having to really plan, except for hitting HP first thing in the morning, and sometimes returning at night, as HP land lit up is neat to photograph.

If your kids can ride the wet rides, make sure they wear their bathing suits or easy dry clothes and shoes. All the wet rides are in IOA, and each of them can get you really wet, even JP, especially if you are in the front row.

Have a great vacation whatever you choose!

There are a bunch of rides the 4 yr old probably won't be tall enough to ride on. But there is several areas in IOA like Seuss land that is all about young kids. At US they have quite a few shows the whole family can go to like Horror Make Up Show (not scary, it is a comedy), Terminator show, Beetlejuice Rock n Roll music show (my favorite)

I have never personally seen any characters walking around either park.

If you do go to IOA make sure you find the talking water fountain in between Seuss Land and Harry Potter area. It is not too far past Poseidon's Adventure show/building. In the Sinbad area. He talks to the kids and jokes around with them and he tries to get them wet and squirts whoever gets close enough.

IOS and US are my two favorite parks. Besides Busch Gardens and Epcot.

Oh gosh, that's no good! The Marvel characters come out at certain intervals through the day on their ATVs, then spread out and do meet&greets. I've see The Grinch roaming (he started a meet&greet in the stroller parking area between One Fish Two Fish and Cat in the Hat when we were there Feb 11th-ish. And there are roaming Whos, as well (awesome face characters, it's unbelievable!).

We also walked past Olive Oyl and Popeye meeting people on our way from Toon Lagoon to the Marvel area.

And then there are the gigantic Egyptian stilt-walkers...

That's ashame. I have seen many characters. HP characters, the conductor, choir, students in their gowns,

The grinch and spiderman, Dr. Doom

In the Studios, Betty Boop, Lucy, Scooby Doo and friends, minions, and more I can't remember now.

Sometimes we caught them just because we were at the riight place/time, sometimes we checked the guide if we really wanted to see one. Since we were there at a slower time, I rarely saw huge lines for characters.

If he's 40 inches there's a pretty good amount rides he can do, but if he's shorter then that I wouldn't bother.

That is a shame. They really do wander all around the parks :thumbsup2

We`ve said the last couple of years we have seen more characters than ever before.

The ones you have named and yes I agree there are loads more, Green Goblin, Marlilyn, Lucy and co, Simpsons and others named above.

Their interaction is always excellent too :thumbsup2

And the Talking Fountain is an essential thing to visit :rotfl:
