Irratated with Canon at the moment

Hmm. From a quick YouTube video that showed how it works, I'd think it'd be faster to just control it from the flash itself, rather than scrolling up and down a big menu with your directional controls.

Anyway, here is the page I quoted from - looks like their original 40D press release.

But you did say that you're unhappy with the results you're getting using the flash on the 40D vs the XT. It sounds like it should function identically on both cameras? Even if you could use the oncamera control, it doesn't add any features, just give you a different way of changing settings. I'm still confused on why you're having problems getting the results you want?

Thanks I'll take a look. I don't know, I just never had the problems with the flash that I am having with it now on the 40D :confused3 Maybe I have just learned enough in the mean time that after I upgraded I was expecting more of my results than I did previously.

Now I get it, you were just looking for an excuse to upgrade your flash. I'll have to remember that one.

Actually no, I would rather that the one I had simply work, like I was lead to believe it would. I have a lot of other things I would have rather spent that money on. In fact, I don't know when I'll be able to get the new one, just that it will evenutally happen.

So is it accurate then to say that:

1) Anything you could do on the 30D, you can do on the 40D
2) The 40D adds new features, but they are only compatible with the newer (580EXII) flashgun?

If so, it doesn't seem unreasonable. But if the 40D removes things from the camera that the previous camera model could control, then that's a Bad Thing.

it could be me but i always got the drift the 400 was for rebel and the 500 series was for everything else since wasn't there a feature on the 500 that you couldn't use with the rebel?( not having either i'm trying to defog my memory) but i don't really think it's odd to be able to use the flash but while it's a current but not as new model as the camera, might not have all the features available that the new camera offers..of course the advertising should mention that as well rather than you having to hunt for it. and i am guessing it wouldn't work on metz or other 3rd party flashes
at least you don't have to shoot in raw to get a decent photo;) ;)

Yes that would be accurate.

I finally got them to admit that their wording is missleading and they will look at changing it at least on the website, not much they can do about the books that are already printed and with the cameras.

Fair enough. I would agree with you that clarity in the explanation is needed, but it also seems reasonable that new features are not available with older equipment...

I guess it's time to learn the 430EX's menu structure :)

(Who is in almost the same boat as you, except he hasn't got anything more advanced that a 350D - but does have a nive flashgun :) )

Rats, hated reading this Master Mason as I am about to get the 40D and I have a 430EX that I have almost NEVER used (so already wasted my $$ there), but at least I want to know I would have the option to take good flash shots with the 40D if I wanted to...:rolleyes1

Well, to be fair, the functionality that you don't get with the 430EX is apparently just convenience, and shouldn't affect the quality of the pictures you get with it. That's why I'm still a little confused by MM is having problems getting decent photos when he didn't with the XT? :confused3 It seems like maybe there's a different problem at work?

I am still trying to figure that one out myself.
