Ironing board "pad"

I know I have started a thread a while ago about needing a new cover for my ironing board but I have figured out that it's the stupid foam "pad" that goes under the cover that I'm having issues with. I think it comes standard with all covers (well maybe not ALL but it's been with every cover I've ever bought)

I'm looking for something else to put under the cover besides this foam piece. I iron A LOT. So I'm sure I put the ironing board, cover and pad through the ringer, often. Well, last night the entire ironing board gave out and collapsed right to the floor. Thankfully, I wasn't ironing yet but I set everything up (separated all the clothes that I would be ironing, got all my hangers ready, pre heated the iron, etc) While the iron was heating up, I went to get a glass of water and my phone. I got back into my bedroom and set my phone on the ironing board and BAM, down it went. :confused3 Hubby said the weld came undone on one of the legs. Not sure if this is the original ironing board I've had since moving here (doubt it but I don't remember ever buying a new one) but I've been here 22 years.

And I know a lot of people on here probably don't iron (don't know many people in my real life who do either) but just wondering if the cover of yours has the foam pad or do you have something else more durable? The issue I'm having with mine is that it's a foam type material that is VERY thin and I guess after ironing so much, the foam gets embedded into the diamond shaped pattern on the ironing board. Then once they dislodge themselves they end up falling on my floor. THEN as I'm ironing, that diamond shaped pattern ends up "ironed onto" my clothing. It's so frustrating.

Just wondering if you can give me some ideas on something durable that I can put under the cover so it won't get stuck into the grooves of the ironing board. Or do you have an ironing board that DOESN'T have that diamond pattern on it? Does yours have a flat, solid surface? I'm going to go out today to find one that I like but thought I would see what everyone else has (that is, if you iron) :thumbsup2

Forget the stores. They only sell those cheap cloth ones. (at least the stores around here)

And I love to iron. So calming. I wish I had more time to iron and yes I iron jeans!

YES!!! This is so me and I have no idea why. I iron just about EVERYTHING. All shirts, sweatshirts, jeans, shorts. The only things I don't iron are undergarments, pajamas, sheets, etc. The cover/pad that you linked, that doesn't have the thin foam-type piece under the cover? I DESPISE that thing. LOL

I have the exact problem. I wish I had my old one from 30 years ago, I didn't know how good I had it.

I keep buying new pads and I still get those diamonds shapes embedded on the clothes. Plus I am on my 4th iron. $40 irons are junk too.

This is the iron that I have. I got it at Walmart for $40. It's been one of the best irons I've had so far. And I go through irons like water.

It does have a spongy liner but it's sewn into the cover. It doesn't move around.

The last ironing board cover I bought from wal mart is pretty sturdy and no foam. Its a thick material (muslin?) on top and a thick soft material underneath.

When I lived overseas and had a part time maid , she wrapped a towel around the ironing board, fixed it on there somehow! There was still a cover over the top of the towel. It worked pretty well. Well, assume it did, I wasn't the one ironing;)

get a real cotton pad. Well worth the money and it will last for years

Yes yes yes yes yes. This is what I'm looking for. Thank you so much. I just went out today to Target to buy a new ironing board (mine collapsed last night) and I ironed a few things on it a while ago. I've come to the conclusion that I hate that ironing board. It's so flimsy and the little rubber feet on the bottom of it doesn't even keep it in place. It moves all around. Not happy.

I have my mom's old ironing board from 50 years ago!!

It is so strong and sturdy and heavy--I will never give that thing up!! I will tell DD that when I die, if she does not want it to sell it for a lot of $$$. It will last until the end of the world!

Good luck!

I have old towels under my pad and cover. I hate those diamond shaped marks that come up! I don't iron a lot but when I do iron I do not want shapes on my clothes.

I am looking for a new ironing board. Those suckers are expensive. I just can't put out the $100 yet that they want at bed bath and beyond.

My mom's Ironing board is well over 50yrs old. Its one of those old wooden ones. She has never used a fancy pad on it. She has a thick cotton or woolen pad on it (she has used a piece of old blanket) and covers it with a 100% cotton sheet. You can buy straps to keep the sheet on or you can just use pins, which is what Mother does

BTW--My ironing board is the same one I used in college...in 1974~!

That's my grandmother's board. It's old and made of wood with the metal hinges. Over the years she's stapled old folded mattress pads with a sheet on top. Last summer I took it all off (worn out with burn spots) and put on a fresh new cover.
She used to iron everything from the line, including my jeans. I hated it so much.
