I know this is a silly question, but does anyone know the least expensive place to buy an ironing board?

My DS just moved into his first apartment at the beginning of the year. He is a new teacher and needs to be neatly pressed every day. I bought him an iron, but was just going to pick up the ironing board tonight. I was looking online at Walmart just to see how much they are... and the prices are $40.00 and higher :scared1:. Am I crazy, or is that a lot of money for an ironing board?

I guess I have had mine a long time, so I just did not realize they were that expensive!

If it comes with the cover, which is the most important part to me, I don't think that's unreasonable. You might be able to pick up a used board at Goodwill or a hotel furniture re-seller.

There are much cheaper ones in the store but you can always try Bed Bath and Beyond(use a 20% off or $5 off $15 coupon), KMart, Target (I've seen it there for $14.99), or even try 5Below. Good luck.

$40 doesn't seem expensive at all :confused3

Like I said... I guess it is because I have had mine so long that I just did not realize. Even though I iron every day, I can't even remember the last time I had to buy a new cover. Come to think of it... the cover was probably $20 by itself.

I think I will try Bed, Bath and Beyond and take a coupon.

Thanks!

I sew and do other crafts where the ironing board is in use. I go through covers -- about one a year.

I saw one over the weekend at Bed Bath & Beyond for $16.99 or $19.99 - can't remember at the moment). I also saw just a cover alone for $26.00 - the less expensive one came with a cover also - I guess it just wasn't as padded or something.

Check in the store. I got mine at Walmart and I know I paid under $20. For 1 person the cover that comes on it will hold up just fine. Mine has.

We got ours at a yard sale. I actually had to buy 3 or 4 before my wife was happy, she was really picky about the stability of the board and type of feet. It was only a couple of dollars each. Since it's a bit cold for yard sales in many parts of the country you can also look in the housewares section of Craigslist. Also check the moving sales, it may not even be listed because it's so inconsequential so ask if they are getting rid of one.

Until you find the right price for an ironing board, maybe your DS could put a towel over the counter, or over a table to use as a temporary ironing board. We used to do that in a pinch. We also pulled the comforter and blanket back on the bed and iron over the top of the sheets. Works pretty good. :thumbsup2

I would like to suggest that if your son is in an apartment it might be a good thing to buy an over the door ironing board. It's a great space saver. It folds down with a push of a button and folds up simply by pushing it up. It will be a life saver for him.

I agree go to Walmart, Target ect the prices may be better than what you see online. Most stores carry the over the door boards.

I had no idea how much ironing boards cost until now. I'm trying to think of the last time I ironed anything. Hmm, I'm not even sure where my iron is. lol

My iron clothes go to the dry cleaners. They launder for $1.29 and dry clean for $1.99. Well worth it to not have to iron!

He may also want to look into the no-iron clothes like Lands End has. I love the no-iron pants for my DH, who teaches. They come out of the dryer without a wrinkle. Plus, being your son's first year teaching, I am sure he is swamped with grades and lesson plans to have much time to iron!

I was glad to see this post because I happen to be in the market for an ironing board! My husband has asked for an ironing board for his birthday, which is Monday (also our 3rd anniversary). Guess it's the Marine in him :rotfl2: . . . the very few times I have needed to iron in the last ~5 years I just put a beach towel on top of the chest freezer. :confused3

He does iron and fold clothes like a dream! :lovestruc

My biggest complaint is that - and boy am I showing my age - they just don't make them like they used to. The last couple of ironing boards I had were soooooo lightweight and unstable I hated them. They came from Walmart so unless I hear glowing recommendations, I'm going elsewhere.

Thanks everyone. I am going to swing by Walmart after work tonight to see what is actually in the store. I might even try the local thrift store.

Maybe the best way to resolve this problem would be for him to move back home so that I can continue to iron for him. Being a mother... that is what I would prefer. LOL. It has been hard to see him go out on his own although I am extremely proud.

In the meantime... he may just have to use the table with a towel or sheet.

I have one I want to get rid of in my basement ;)

Honestly, I just use the table or the kitchen island with a towel thrown over top. I don't iron a lot, but when I have too, those work just fine.

try asking on freecycle. I have one I've been trying to give away but no takers. It's going into the goodwill pile but I bet other people have ones they don't use and would love to get rid of.

I can't remember if I got my ironing board at WalMart or IKEA... but I know I spent about $10 on it. I've had it four years now and it has held up just fine. I don't do a lot of ironing, though, admittedly.
