Iraq to split?

Love him or hate him (probably the latter if you're normal), Saddam kept the lid on the rival cultures within his country. Now with the oppression gone, Iraq has gone mad as was to be expected for at least a short while.

A senior political figure in Downing Street has been quoted as saying that "Iraq as a political project is finished" and that "[the] parties have moved to plan B."

"He said that the Shia, Sunni and Kurdish parties were now looking at ways to divide Iraq between them and to decide the future of Baghdad, where there is a mixed population. "There is serious talk of Baghdad being divided into [Shia] east and [Sunni] west," he said." -- The Independent, a newspaper intended to be, uh, independent.

I wonder if anything will come of this?

Some very smart people suggested the three nation concept from the time we invaded. If they don't WANT to all be part of one nation, why should outsiders force them to?

with the levels of people dying every day now, i think it is pretty safe to say there is currently a civil war.

I heard that the Kurds and Shiites wanted to separate from the beginning. The UN did not want that to happen. One of the reasons is that Turkey has a large Kurdish population that want to separate from Turkey and join up with the Iraq Kurds. They want the land from Turkey too. The Kurds and Shiites have oil but the Sunnis do not. So there are economic ramifications to this split.

The UN is the one who did not want Iraq divided.

US troops are being redeployed to Baghdad to try and get the situation under control. It's difficult to see how they are going to achieve this at the moment!

There is a civil war in progress in Iraq.

What is going to be interesting is to see what Turkey does. Turkey does not want an independent Kurkish state formed and espicially does not want a Kurdish state formed with a great deal of oil wealth.

The idea of establishing a demoracy in Iraq was doomed from the start. Even if these people are successful in splitting into three separate states, they will continue to wage war. Why? Because that's what they do and have done for thousands of years. It's a way of life (or death).

Perhaps we should just pull out and let them continue to kill each other as long as they promise never to attack outside their own region ever again. Since such promises tend to be empty, nuke them if they ever attack us again.

I know that's pretty extreme, but I'm getting sick and tired of all the bickering.

I've been saying this would probably happen from the beginning. Either Rumsfeld did not anticipate this scenario or he thought a miracle would occur. Either way, civil peace in Iraq is going to be a long, rough road indeed.

Interesting concept.

The same thing happened after the death of Tito in Yugoslavia. Now it's about 47 different little countries. Of course there was that nagging little ethnic cleansing mess in the interim.

And it has (sort of) worked between India & Pakistan (the Kashmir region thing being a sore sticking point).

I saw mentioned that Turkey may invade the northern part of Iraq to prevent an independent Kurd state from being established.

what about Iran, would they invade Iraq to claim it too?

It's funny, I've heard similar things recently - suddenly the playing field is sporting more than just two sides.

Kinda hard to know what they want being as the west (Britain and the US) has carved out Iraq and tried to control the government remotely for about 100 years now.

Turkey also has a hand in some of the black market nuclear technology going on. Something that Sibel Edmonds knows something of but she's under a retroactive gag order and can't discuss what she knows. Thanks, Ashcroft.
