Love him or hate him (probably the latter if you're normal), Saddam kept the lid on the rival cultures within his country. Now with the oppression gone, Iraq has gone mad as was to be expected for at least a short while.
A senior political figure in Downing Street has been quoted as saying that "Iraq as a political project is finished" and that "[the] parties have moved to plan B."
"He said that the Shia, Sunni and Kurdish parties were now looking at ways to divide Iraq between them and to decide the future of Baghdad, where there is a mixed population. "There is serious talk of Baghdad being divided into [Shia] east and [Sunni] west," he said." -- The Independent, a newspaper intended to be, uh, independent.
I wonder if anything will come of this?
