I feel compelled to tell you about a meeting with a US soldier that I met last night. He was a friend of my wife's; in fact, he works with her. And he came back after 18 months of duty ( he's a 43 year old reservist ). And, overall, he was very upbeat, only disappointed that ( in his words ) "people here in the US aren't hearing anything good about Iraq".

So, I will give you the highlights:

1. He said that 90 - 95% of the Iraqis he met are very happy for what was done in Iraq. He said he was treated well allmost at every turn. ( He was stationed near Basra, but also spent time in Kuwait )

2. Females of all ages are now going to school. He said that only 3% of Iraqi Women over the age of 30 qualify as "literate", but now 75% of young girls over age 6 are going to school.

3. People ( Iraqis ) tell him that the infrastructure is now far better than it was before we went there.

4. He could not belive how happy Iraqis were to be able to vote. He said that they were bursting with pride. And they are still talking about the original voting process.

5. More Iraqi people than he expected, want to be more westernized than they are now.

So, I am hoping this doean't become a debate thread. There are, and have been plenty of those on DIS. I just wanted to let you know that there are good things happening in Iraq, things that we do not hear about. It isn't all doom and gloom. This was the first US soldier I met that had been in Iraq. He made me feel much better than before I talked to him.

Excellent news. Thanks for posting. :goodvibes

Makes me proud to be an American.

A big thank you to our President and our brave troops and allies, and of course, to all the brave Iraqi's :sunny:

I agree with this--My brothers best friend, who is like a brother to me , just came home about a week and a half ago..it was amazing talking to him because the whole time he was away he would email and tell us that its not how it seems to be and that there were good things going on...
im so proud of him and what they are doing over there and its nice to hear the good things sometimes!

Too bad the liberal main stream media chooses not to pick up on this. They are too busy tearing down the morale of soldiers overseas and fueling the looney left and giving comfort to our enemy. Meanwhile Osama is smiling in his cave.

No debate from me. I have no doubt that the troops are doing wonderful things for the Iraqi people and that is definitely a big plus. My feelings about the current administration in no way has anything to do with the good things that are happening over there.

Thanks for sharing with us. :)

DH says only positive things after his year tour that ended this summer. People don't seem to believe or want to read the good on these boards though. Not sure why! DH has even spoken to groups about his experiences.

Thanks for posting and sharing! :)

That is great! I already knew alot of it because I watch Fox news, but I am glad to see it anywhere other than only one source!

My friends Son in law is in Iraq, and they firmly believe two things, that they are doing the right thing, and that it will be a Vietnam reception when they get home.

Wonderful news! Thanks for sharing! Make's me proud to be an American too!

Thank you for sharing. It is indeed sad that so many others can't see the good we are doing.

And as for this, I think the liberals learned from the last time they did this, so I don't think that'll be happening again. I will agree that the main stream media needs to pick up on this.
