I have been debating on either getting my kids a netbook or ipod touches for Christmas. DH thinks the Ipod touch would get more use as it is more portable. So, I think I am leaning in that direction.

I have been looking at the Apple Website as I am looking at refurbishe ones also and want to get a 16GB or 32GB. On there it shows a 1st and 2nd Generation. Is there now a 3rd generation also?? I am Ipod challenged -so, not sure what the difference is between them. I think I am leaning towards the 2nd generation but not sure if there is a newer one out?? Help and Thanks. Lynn

I think it all depends on the ages of the kids. I know that DS13 has an iPod and loves it. The newer iPods have video capability and are a better deal than a netbook. The main problem with the netbooks for me is that they have limited storage space and no disc drives. If you tech savvy enough to make a network share drive that everyone can get to, they would be good enough. I would go with netbook if you want the kids to be able to do more than listen to music, and watch videos.

They are 8 and 10. They both have Ipod Nano's right now. The netbooks would basically be for them online (webkinz, games etc). But, I like the portability of the Ipod Touches and the games and Wi Fi. Just confused on the different generations of them....

They all have the internet, video, music capability. I think 2nd gen introduced the speaker.

I found this on wikipedia, toward the bottom it breaks down the generations:

Thanks. That helps alot. So, there is 3 generations and they just discontinued the 16 and 32 from the 2nd generation, which is what I was leaning towards. I may have to see if any of the stores still have these in stock or get refurbished ones from the Apple Website.

I was in the same situation with my daughter's birthday request. We ended up getting her an iPod touch which she loves. We ended up going with the 32GB.

NP I can't imagine them all selling out of the stock right away, you should be able to get them from the stores yet. I was thinking about getting two for my DS's 12 & 13 (16 yr old has a 1st & 2nd, bought on his own). I was talking with him, without telling him what I wanted to do, he said that they sell stock on hand first before we get the new product/generation. How true that is, I don't know. For some reason I would think that Best Buy would go through the stock quicker than a place like K-Mart. Last I knew Apple dictated the cost of their products, you shouldn't see much fluctuation in price (if any). I think some can offer store rebates, we received one on the nano for $50. It was through Meijer, not Apple, which I think would be their way around that. Good luck. Quite honestly, if it were me I would purchase the ipod's, just thinking of the ease of use and availability of products for it. Small hdd space but enough to be usable. My DS16 actually uses his in school for geometry instead of a calculator.

Yeah, I'm thinking the portability will be great for the car and we are going on a Cruise in March, so would be good for the plane too. My Dad retired from Target and they get a 10% discount and every so often they get another 10% on top of it. So, I could see if they have any in stock and get it that way. I just didn't want to have to get them now as then the 1 year warranty will start now instead of at Christmas, but if I wait then they may only have the new 3rd Generations out (unless I get refurbished ones - can't imagine they will run out of those -but at the discounted prices, who knows...)

before the warranty expires you can add to it. I think another year or two for about $60 (I think). We extended the warranty on his first one. Double check, there are plenty of ipod sites out there, they were having issues with the batteries. We have sent his in two or three times concerning that. I haven't asked my son if they have resolved this issue from 1st gen to 2nd.
