We have 2 ipod touch, we barely use them.

They are an older generation, last model without a camera. We got them 3 years ago (I think). We use them pretty much for music only.

My kids are now into apps. They play with apps on my android phone, and their friends have shown them apps on ipods and iphones. We updated itunes last night, found some apps to load on the ipods, and low an behold, none of them are compatible with our ipods.

We did all the ipod updates, nothing worked.

I know technology changes and improves over time, but really, these ipods are all but useless now, no apps work on them. I really don't want to spend $300 on new ones, and honestly, I am just not a fan of apple.

Should I suck it up and buy new ipods? Is there a non apple alternative? If I do buy new ipods, how long until they are obsolete too?

Should I skip the ipod all together and just buy tablets? Can an android tablet play itunes music? (technologically challenged)

Of course these would have been great topics to explore BEFORE Christmas..... oh well.

I don't know why your apps wouldn't work? My DD had a 2nd generation Ipod and all apps worked on that. She just bought herself the 4th generation with her Christmas money. Maybe it's the type of app? Do you have an apple store near you? I'd go in there and see if you could get someone to help you, that just doesn't sound right to me.:scratchin

Depending on the exact model they have a maximum operating system level that are supported..

For example I believe the generation 1 version will not take anything newer than AOS 3.3.

I believe you are describing the 3rd generation Touch.. and it will allow OS upgrades up to 5.1 according to the link.

Now as the other posted mentioned.. some of the newer apps are for 5.x or newer.. and there are a few that are 6.x or higher.

I hope this helps..
We have in our house a ton of apple products.. 1st gen Touch, 2 4th gens, 1 iphone 5, 1 ipad2, and an imac..... oh yeah.. a apple tv too.. this is funny as I am windows guys.. :)

Hi, i'm from the UK but i have the same problem , i have a second gen ipod touch, and I can no longer get the new apps and games, i have done a little bit of research and found out that they are not sending out and operating system update for 2nd gen anymore,

The problem lie in the fact that the newest apps require a newer operating system to function,

at first I thought it might have been a ploy by apple for people to have to buy newer models but it was explained to me , that because the first and second gens are older they can't keep up with the newer operating systems , graphics wise etc.

the technology has vastly improved since the first touches ,

I have decided to keep mine for music in the car etc and i'm thinking of getting an ipad mini or a new touch

Hope this helps or kinda explains it a little at least

It is not letting me update to anything newer than 4.1.1

I have the same generation as he does, but his is 8gb, mine is 32

Mine updated to 5.1 and the apps he likes are running on it, but I can't get his to upgrade to this version.

******edited to add*******
OK, just did some research, his is a second generation, mine is third. So I guess I will load all the apps on mine, use his for music, and pick up a newer one at a later date.

Thanks for all the help!

How much memory does he have left? My daughter has an 8 g 4th generation and we can't update the iOS unless we delete some apps/video/music for space

We were still using an ipod touch 2g (one gen before the one's you're talking about) until this past summer, when DD sold hers and our 2nd one had the battery die just before Christmas. There were some newer apps that didn't work on them (forever drive is one my DD wanted but wouldn't work on hers so i put it on my newer 4th gen), but other apps, Angry Birds, lots of the running games, can't remember names right now, worked just fine. There were few that she wanted that she couldn't get. I would recommend googling "best apps of 2010" or 2011 and seeing what pops up, search for the names of those, and, they're older so they may be free now vs paid when they came out
. When you go on itunes usually only the most recent apps pop up as you browse. Searching for names of things might be an easier way to find working apps.
Some apps may have recently updated and are now incompatible, even the flashlight app I have on my BRAND NEW ipod touch 4th gen won't work now since it requires an LED light. It can be frustrating!

Don't update to ios 6 for an ipod touch, totally not worth it! We're not updating our 8 gb since it says it requires 6 gb storage! There's no point because then it won't hardly hold any songs or apps!
There's really nothing great about ios 6, and a lot not great, I wouldn't do it!

The alternative, google Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. That is basically the Samsung Galaxy phone without phone capabilities much like the iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone capabilities.

Coworker bought them for his kids. He hasn't said much about them though since just after Christmas when he was just trying to figure them out.
