Iphone?????????????????

Does make one think, doesn't it?

Even if the numbers are lower, one should certainly look at the overall picture before paying for a data phone.

I am still on the fence.

I'm looking for a link too, we saw it on t.v. maybe 2 days ago. They weren't saying it was $4k MORE than other smart phones, they just laid out the costs over a 2 year contract that were 'typical', it was based on a Verizon plan for 2 year contract. It also *did* include a monthly insurance cost for repair/replacement. I'm assuming they used top tier plans, which apparently most people who get the iphone end up with (whether they start there or upgrade due to overages on lower plans).

I don't find a link to that story, but here's a link from last Feb, and its showing about $3600-$3700+ over the 2 years then. It would be easy to hit $4,000 if you add in the insurance monthly at just $10/month you're just about there.

I have had better luck going to the actual store. However, if you check your account online it will tell you when you can upgrade to get the discounted phone which is 1 1/2 years into your current contract. The only other option is ebay.

If you do get an iphone I HIGHLY recommend getting an Otterbox case for it. This morning I was putting bags in my car and put my phone on the roof- I pulled out of the parking lot onto the Long Island Expressway service road and hear bump bump bump on the roof-in my rearview mirrow I see my phone bouncing down the service road. I pull over and see a car run over my iphone- lucky that was the only car in sight so I ran out and got the phone and went back to my car. The only thing wrong with my phone is that the case is all cracked up and I need a new one-not a scratch on the phone!

Thanks for this! We had the original iphone but my teenagers (twins) each broke their phone. We didn't replace them and just paid out our contract then moved over to Verizon and got LG's and everyone hated them. Contract came up so we just switched back and got the newest iphones (coming today :cool1:).

We almost got insurance but they were kind of sucky so I decided to just get good cases. I wanted to get them a soft flip cover case but they both whined about it and I figured they'd likely not use it. So I have the Otterbox Defenders coming. I was wondering if they were really that good. This make me feel better about dropping $50 a case for 4 iphones!

I bought mine on amazon for about 16.00 each!

I really do not like the phone i have right now and was thinking about getting the iphone. However, my two year plan is not up yet. Can i get the iphone now without having to pay an extra fee? Because i know that when getting a new phone phone AT&T you get money taken off the phone if you get a new two year contract. So I'm just asking if i get an iphone, will it still be $199?

Are you asking if the price will go down? No, it won't - $199 is the subsidized price. It's not going to get any lower.

Did anyone besides me see the Fox news (might have been CNN) report just Friday on the 2 year total 'typical' cost on owning a single iphone?
ALMOST $4000 OVER 2 YEARS WOW! My husband was wanting one, saw that and said forget it-- that's Florida resident annual passes for 4 of us for two years...or one iphone for two years.... ummmmm no contest.

That number includes the cost of the phone plan. If you have a phone with a data plan already, you'll be paying that amount whether or not you buy an iPhone, so it's silly (and misleading) to include that in the cost of the phone itself.

I saw those! They dont fit the new ones.

The Otterbox cases? My husband has one for his new 4S. It fits just fine.

No the cheaper ones on Amazon don't fit. The ones that fit are more expensive which is what i ordered.

Are the Otterboxes really nice?

Otterboxes are nice and they have another brand called Lifeproof that is good too. The Lifeproof is more expensive but I like to keep my phones looking nice so I can sell them. I sold my iPhone 4 for $186 and paid $199 for the 4s. Basically, I upgraded for $13.

Can someone explain to me how the add a line works? Am I adding another person (we already have 4) or can I cancel it? We have AT&T and my daughter has been begging for an Iphone 4 and her sweet sixteen is coming up, but we aren't ready for an upgrade.

If you add a line and get a reduced rate on the iPhone for that line, you'll have to pay a cancellation fee if you cancel that line. Are any of your other phones eligible for an upgrade? If so, you can use that and have the iPhone put on your daughter's line.

I'm so glad to see this. My dd has my old 3G. Ds8 just got an itouch that has Facetime, and realized that dd's 3G phone does not have Facetime. That, among other things, really has her wanting the 4G. She is not eligible for an upgrade for quite a while, but dh is eligible in December. So, if I'm reading this correctly, I can go in and upgrade dh's phoneline and buy the 4G, and they will be OK with assigning that phone to dd's line?

I'm so excited by this idea. We've hit an odd strange for Christmas gifts this year....they are at odd ages where nobody wants anything noteworthy (at least not enough ideas to share with family). The 4G would make a great gift!!

Does anyone know if I can make the upgrade and wait until after Christmas to get the new SIM card? The 3G and 4G don't take the same card, and I'd hate to de-activate the card in her current phone until after Christmas.

Yes; it's called a "complex upgrade."

The new card will come with the new phone, but that doesn't mean you have to activate it yet. I'd talk to your AT&T people about the best way to do this.

$4000 seems extremely high to me...the only way I could see that is if the person buys a ton of apps and music on their iPhone.

I pay $23 each month for my data plan (with a corporate discount)and average around $10 per month in app and music charges. That comes to a total of $792 extra every two years.

I guess overage and roaming charges could add up really quick but I wouldn't think those would apply to the average smart phone user.

It wasn't for the data plan, it was for the entire thing. Take your total bill and times it by 24 months.....what is it?

It may be far less, but that is how they figured it out.

But the data plan is the only difference between my cell phone before and a smart phone :confused3. I suppose that would apply if a person didn't have a cell phone at all and then got an iPhone but the cost of getting a smart phone should not include the calling plan otherwise.

Besides, taking the cost of my calling plan into it, my phone bill for 5 phones doesn't come to $4000 either; All 5 phones equals $3600 in 24 months. If you just take my portion of it ($60 per month) it is only $1440 in 24 months.

Well, my phone came and I must say...Siri is AWESOME! I love the way this thing responds to you.

Me, "Siri, will you marry me?"
Siri, "We hardly know one another."
Me, "When we get to know each other better will you marry me?"
Siri, "My end user licensing agreement does not cover marriage. My apologies."

Juvenile? Maybe. And maybe even a little creepy that my phone responds that well. But it's giving me a LOT of fun, lol. I may not need friends anymore.

Now I just need my Otterbox to come. I'm afraid to take my phone out of the house till I get something on it. Why the heck is the back made of glass now?

Make sure you ask her what she is wearing or tell her you need to hide a body :rotfl:

Iit's probably a good thing my iPhone doesn't have Siri on it, I would never get anything done.

OMG....

Me, "Siri, what are you wearing?"
Siri, "Aluminosilicate glass and stainless steel. Nice, huh?"
:lmao:

How the heck did they make a phone do this?

ETA:

Me, "I need to hide a body."
Siri, "What kind of place are you looking for? Dumps, metal foundries, reservoirs, swamps, mines?"

Wow....now THAT is a helpful phone, lol.
And you're right...I'm never gonna get anything done!
