iphone use at wdw

Hi,
My DH has a telus iphone and we would like to use it while down in the US. He can purchase a blank At& T sim card online and would like to know if there are non-expiry pay as you go data and talk plans through AT & T. Has anybody tried this? There are great apps for wdw and we would like to use them. Thanks!

If your DH wants to use an AT&T sim card on a Telus iPhone, he needs a carrier unlocked iPhone.

Most iPhone are locked to the carrier they where sold by, unless otherwise specified.

If it is a locked iPhone, as I expect, it can be unlocked by Jailbreaking the phone and then unlocking it, but this might void the warranty. Also, at this moment, some iPhone cannot be unlocked depending of the software version installed. ( a fix for this is apparently imminent). you can search the net for this, but the "iphone dev-team" would be the safest bet for such info. (Beware there is a lot of scam for unlocking iPhone. And unlocking software should be free)

Once that done, if you search on the internet, you will find companies selling pay go card for unlocked iPhone that would work in the state. Don't expect any good rate for Data plan. The good data plans seems to be offered only to monthly subscriber.

BTW, his iPhone will work in the state as is, but roaming fees applies

We travel with our iphones (FIDO). We buy the Travel Packs for phone service, One time so many minutes at a reduced rate, turn off the data roaming and use a wireless router in our hotel room to get our email etc.

This works well for us. (We generally travel DVC so the internet is free in the room otherwise $10)

If he is still on 3.1.x and using itunes 9.1 (NOT 4.0 and NOT itunes 9.2) there is a jailbreak and unlock available.

The biggest issue is the iphone software itself (if he has upgraded then he is Out of Luck at the moment).

As for the plans, there is not a non expiry plan. the voice text and data plan is $60 and expires after 60 days of non use.

Note that you also have to activate it when in the US (since they send a text message to the phone on the AT&T network ONLY to activate the sim).

Since the AT&T plan is $60, and a Rogers US package is only $10 per month (minimum 6 months) may just save yourself the hassle and call Rogers and ask them about it.

Thanks everybody- it seems like it is going to be a royal PITA, so I don't think that we will bring it! Which I am totally OK to do,. but as for DH... he just loves his little gadgets etc.

just an FYI, the unlock and jailbreak are good things to look into REGARDLESS of whether or not he wants to use a separate sim card.

It is NOT illegal, and even the new Canadian Copyright law specifically allows for it without penalty.

the benefit of an jail-broken Iphone are tremendous! (in fact a lot of the "new" capabilities of IOS4 were first offered in Jailbreak ware, which is free, and works better than what is provided by Apple.

Of course, if you are already on the upgrade, then you can't jailbreak...
