iphone tom tom GPS add

I was wondering has anyone got the new tom tom app for the iphone

was planning to get a new Sat Nav when we are over in Florida next week but my son has just found this new App
wondering if this would be a better buy this instead of the Sat nav

There was a review of this in todays issue of USA Today (Aug 18) Says the price for the USA and Canada version is $99.99 for an app!!!! It does ask..."Why spend almost $100 on software when a free-standing GPS unit is almost the same price?"
Since I only own a touch, I will not be getting this app....Others may like it since it will be less to carry around....(cell, GPS, ipod) guess I just like being a pack mule

I haven't got hold of it yet, will probably try sometime today and let you know what it's like. I have the Navegon sat nav app which works pretty well.

One thing tho, from looking at the AppStore they seem to have split the tomtom app into sections, such as 'uk and ireland', 'western eirope' and 'USA and canada', so you would possibly have to shell out for both home and USA, so if that's the case i'd recommend a standalone (plus the USA one is over a gb in size!!)

My DH has just bought another one - not Tom Tom and it is very good! When he comes home I will ask the name( I do know it was half the price) !!!

Had a little play, it's interface is certainly better than Navegon which I've now deleted, I'll try it on the road this afternoon

Further playing around has revealed some badly out of date stuff too, including giving me the option to navigate to a McDonalds which shut down over a year ago

Downloaded and installed last night. So far, I'm pretty pleased, although it is lacking in a few areas that I'm hoping they update in the near future. (I had a $50 iTunes gift card, so it really only cost me $50)

Anyway, interface is nice, clean, and easy to use. I tested it out this morning on my way to work, and it was very, very accurate. Gave me announcements on upcoming turns, how long to go etc. etc. When deviating from the pre-determined route, it re-routed in seconds.

There is a lot to look at, play with, and test out here, but I just wanted to post that initially, it seems like a decent product. Things that I HOPE they add in the near future, especially at this price point:

1. TTS - This should be standard. I can't believe it is not there
2. Updated POI. Found a few things in my area it does not know about.
3. More fully integrated iPod controls. At this stage, all you get is the skip\next control when double tapping the home button. Would be nice to have access to everything from within the app. (Navigon does this).
4. Integration with Google maps for searching. This would eliminate the need to update the POI's. I believe stand alone Tomtom's have this ability now. Why it would not be there on a phone, which already has internet connectivity is beyond me.

There are a few other things, all minor, that I would like to see, but overall, I'm happy with the purchase. Once I get to play around with it a bit more, I'll probably be more comfortable with it.

As far as I can tell, the TomTom in-car kit for the iPhone (which includes enhanced GPS reception, FM transmitter etc.) is not yet available and will be available sometime in the next few months. The reason I mention this is that from what I have read online (sketchy details, nothing official, don't quote me on this, may be different in the US) the in-car kit will (somehow?) include the app in the price.

For this reason, I plan on waiting until the in-car kit is available. It will be one less thing to carry around.

Interesting. I was debating, and debating, and de......on whether or not to go with Navigon or Tomtom for quite a while before actually buying Tomtom the other day. I got it for the same price as Navigon, as I had an unused iTunes gift card from a while back.

So having had both, it sounds like you prefer Tomtom over the Navigon? I said interesting, as the opinions on this seem greatly varied. I went with Tomtom as I figured I knew the name, Apple was touting them at WWDC, and they will most likely be around for a while....hopefully updating and adding to the application.

I didn't properly use Navegon, just got it as it was the first so I wanted to see how voice guided sat nav would work. When playing around it seemed slow and a bit unresponsive and wasn't that intuitive to use.
On that front I prefer TomTom, howeet as I said in another post, the UK version at least seems to be out of date - this was fine when I thought it would just offer me a few defunct McDonalds, but tonight I used it to look for a car park, and it obviously hadn't been updated to incorporate my city centre's new (ish) one way system, which is a worry
