noaa just upped this to 60% chance to becoming tropical storm ernesto over the next 48 hours... models are all over the place with this right now..some show this staying to the south, but others are now showing it taking a more northern turn...starting to get alittle antsi now, i know much worse things in live then a vacation ruined, and i pray for the people in its path. i fly from CT on 8/10 morning.. some models show this skirting the Florida coast as a T.S or cat 1 on 8/10... this is just how my week will be now.. paid vacation for 13 months now..i didnt get insurance. now if this small chance happens, i picture flights into orlando being canceled for days on end... i have been sooo exitied about this vacation, and now all the exitment is gone because it might be canceled. my dates are firm due to work, i cant leave on the 9th, and i have to return on the 19th. i can now see this going from a 9 night trip, down to a 4-5 night trip... sorry if I sound selfish, just needing to vent alittle..all the exitment of this vacation has been sucked out of me...stinks:sad1:

Flights are not going to be cancelled for days on end unless there is major damage to the airport. Forecasts this far out are not reliable.

And again, worrying about something that may, or very possibly may not, happen, for another 10 days, is fruitless. Weather forecasters can't forecast, with any reliability, more than 3 days ahead.

I understand your concern with weather. And it's too bad you didn't buy travel insurance. If anyone is thinking about flying into Florida, in July, August or Sept, and they can't be flexible regarding travel dates, then they really should consider buying the insurance.

Watch your airline's official site as you get closer to your departure day. If there is any thought of cancelling flights, they will give you options. You may have to cancel the flight, take the refund and spend the a day or two driving down. Perhaps you can rent a car..drive one way and still fly back. But in all reality, it's just not worth getting all nudgy now. As I've already said...I flew into MCO the same day the hurricane arrived...and that wasn't a case of the storm running up the coast...it traveled right over Orlando!! Dead on hit!! We flew in before they closed the airport down...by a few hours. So, even with the storm making direct impact on Orlando, we were still able to fly in.

I agree; airlines know how to divert flights and cruise ships know how to navigate around hurricanes.

One year, my mom and I went on a cruise and we followed Hurricane Keith down the coast and then they crossed over behind it.

If you travel during hurricane season, you get some great deals for sure, but you run the risk from time to time to have to be prepared and realize that these places are prepared for hurricanes for sure. They go through it much more than we do.

If it were me, the only thing I would be worried about is if you were getting ready to leave and the day before bad weather is barreling down where you live. Making the decision to leave your home in the hands of others to take care of is far worse than heading to a place where they are used to handling it.

And really, ten days ahead? Regular weather will change in that time period; bad weather changes even more often over several days....don't sweat it.

I know im beeing a worried pest....its just that i have the worse luck in the world... i am known to worry about nothing all the time...sorry again

I flew into West Palm Beach within HOURS of Andrew hitting that area.

I have flown in and out of lots of airports immediately before and after hurricanes (Charley in Orlando comes to mind)

The ONLY times I have seen things closed for "days" on end was for a direct hit (AKA Andrew closed one of the three S. Florida airports), major disaster (AKA as New Orleans, airport was not closed for days on end due to hurricane damage, but due to the flooding in the area) or a terrorist attack (9/11)

ANd when they closed airports the airlines shoved planes into other airpots (which is why I landed and West Palm Beach) No big deal.

Orlando is inland. It's going to take the storm of the century to close that airport for "days on end" Even in the year where it get got hit several times by hurricanes airports were not closed for more then a few hours. Airlines may have taken a while to recover but...

You are driving yourself crazy over things you can't control and 'inventing' issue. Quit watching the "weather forecasts" for a few days. There's NOTHING you can do. As you can tell, they don't have a CLUE and won't' for a while so all you are doing is making yourself crazy!

Playing devil's advocate here.

Understandable that Orlando seldom closes for more than a few hours. However, what if his flight is scheduled to land in Orlando during those few hours, and his flight is cancelled. What are the chances of him picking up a flight a day or two afterwards? Not the greatest, because those with tickets already have priority.

OP, I still don't think you have much to worry about. Chances of it hitting central Florida are slim. And if it hits, I think it will arrive before the 10th. Good luck.

<ETA> Haven't seen this in nearly a year:

It's the Disboard thread on what to do in case your flight is delayed. Lots of good information there. Probably won't affect you; however it may help someone else through the hurricane season.

Also OP, if worst comes to shove, you probably could take the day before off. Several years ago, we were scheduled to drive to WDW on a Friday night during a snowstorm. Neither DH or I thought we could take off. DH took a personal day, and I took an additional vacation day, and we travelled several hours south of the storm.

I am going to take an opportunity from your post to reiterate something to worry about. Do not worry about going into adverse weather where people are skilled at handling it, but what you could potentially leave behind at home or what you have to face as a professional in the middle of an adverse weather situation.

Your post about Andrew is case in point.

My boss was in Miami during Hurricane Andrew.
It was his second post in the Coast Guard.
The storm was set to hit during the middle of the night, when you cannot "see" the weather coming through, like you can in daylight.
He had just been transferred from his base in Norfolk, VA four weeks before.
His wife was at home with their twin daughters, who were born two months premature, and had only been released from the hospital four weeks before they moved.
The Coast Guard could not give him an exception; he had to come into work and he had to leave his wife and daughters on base to ride it out.

That is something to worry about.....

It's an official storm now, with a forecasted track:

i want to pray for the folks that might be in the way of this storm, they take priority over any vacation that might be ruined.... with that out of the way, this board has made me feel better.. i cant get worked up over the small chance this causes a delay.. i assumed that any threat of a t.s or hurricane would close airlines down for days on end.. didnt relize it was only if its touching down on that particular airport.. with that said, this early storm does not look like it would touch orlando area, but its good to know if it does, that i can just wait it out and take a flight later in the day or a day or so later, and i wont go 5-6 days missing the flight... its kind of fun tracking this little storm... not gonna sweat it now.. cant...

We leave on the 9th out of Bradley and I won't worry about my flight until the day before if something is brewing in the tropics. We will just ask to get on a Wed. night fllight. The track of the storm doesn't even take it near Florida at this point so I wouldn't worry. After the 5 inches of rain we had today in our town in an hour and all the damage and flooding it brought, a
little rain won't stop us.

There is a chance that Ernesto would affect the flight into our home airport because we live on the Gulf coast. For that reason, I've booked a one way rental car on the day we're scheduled to leave in case we need to drive home. If the weather looks ok the day before we leave, I'll cancel. Better to be safe than sorry.
BTW, no one can tell this far out that the storm would not affect Orlando. There have been more times that I can count when a hurricane was supposed to hit us head on and veered in another direction and also hurricanes were projected to hit a few hundred miles to either the east or west of us and instead made a beeline towards us. That's why I booked the rental.
