Complicated and difficult if one does not understand timeshare exchanges. Risky as well without proper planning and investigation.

I haven't traded my DVC thru I.I. (and probably never will), but I have traded other timeshares, and found it pretty easy. I've always gotten what I wanted, although I've always had realistic expectations. (eg, I don't try for high demand resorts during peak seasons). I do insist on I.I.'s 5-star resorts only though. And I don't 'deposit first', only 'request first'. That way if what I want doesn't come thru, I don't give up my own resort week. But like I said, I've always gotten what I wanted.

I've done four weeks this year, three of them within 60 days because of our home sale/purchase and relocation schedule coming together on fairly quick timing.

However those were with MVCI weeks and I had the benefit of some great assistance from the my VOA and the Marriott desk at II to help me think through what I was trying to do. In the end I made two of the trades myself online and they handled two for me via phone.

In the rare case when MS has a week "in stock" (they'll tell you on the phone) when you want to travel and to a resort that pleases you, the exchange is effortless. We made such an exchange last year to Marriott Ford's Colony at Williamsburg. There's also one resort on the big island of Hawaii (Kona Coast II) that you can usually land if you start a few months or a year ahead of time that's a pretty good value -- not on the beach, but close by and the rooms are nice. Beyond that, you need to give MS as broad a selection of dates and resorts as possible, do research to make sure your choices will please you, and keep your fingers crossed. BTW, some members rent their points, then use the cash to travel to a condo or hotel that they've booked themselves outside of Interval International. Others don't trade their DVC points at all, but keep a less expensive timeshare to use for trading. Again, you need to know what you're doing but it's possible to get good results.
