Do you sometimes get the feeling that certain posters are standing by to correct your posts as and when you make a boo-boo? Even when it doesn't affect them?

You’re wrong. No one ever corrects anyone else online. Are you sure you aren’t suffering from Web Derangement Syndrome?

If I were you, I would arrange to be diagnosed immediately.

^^Posted with a giant, tongue-in-cheek, WINK 😜 ^^

Serious answer is that for as long as people have been posting to IRC, Usenet, BBS, Message Boards, Listservs, Forums, etc— there have been flamers & trolls hanging about.
So, yes… there’s always someone. And one will always appear, even in the most tame, uncontroversial, positive thread… there’s always gotta be “that guy”. 🙄

Just remember never to feed them, and eventually they go away. Or at least they find somewhere else to play for a while.

Sorry… I’m not sure how my answers ended up in two posts. I thought I was editing to add to the first, but I think maybe I ended up in the bottom text box instead of the editing one….
If a moderator wants to combine them, I’m ok with that. ::yes::

What do you mean by a "boo boo?" A grammatical/typographical error? Posting/sharing incorrect information? Or something else?

Slip of the tongue, saying something that could be construed to mean another whilst not being conscious of the fact.
Thanks for clarifying.

I'm not sure that I feel certain people are "standing by" waiting to correct others for boo boos. However, I personally believe that words matter, and word choice matters. I feel that some people on this board are a bit too careless with their words/word choice, and spend a lot of time backtracking, "what I meant was." And I'm not talking about the occasional boo boo, we're all human and it happens to all of us. There are some that fall into the former, and some that fall into the latter-the former is what bugs me, not the latter.

I think that it is okay to let someone know if they are providing incorrect information, but it should be done respectfully. Just provide the right info (with a screenshot if possible) and assume the OP meant no harm. For example, if someone posted that theme park parking fees were $15 and they were really $25 (just pulling numbers out of the air for the example) it’s easy enough to get that info from Disney’s site to show the correct amount.

Things like grammar, spelling, using the wrong form of a word (their, there, they’re) should just be left alone. I have found that every time I do an upgrade on my phone or computer, autocorrect gets more wonky and if I post too quick, I am likely to post something odd. I do go back and edit when I catch it, but I don’t always catch them all. I do try to avoid using slang or pop culture references unless I am familiar with the other people posting. What is funny in one country may be offensive in another, and I would not want to offend someone if I am aware of the issue. I have apologized on the boards a few times for things that offended others. Fortunately they were kind enough to point out the problem believing it was not intentional (it wasn’t).

There are some people who get joy out of finding other’s mistakes, whether in real life or online.

I totally agree. I was just trying to seek clarification from the OP on what was meant by "boo boo."

I take the same approach-if I see incorrect information I try to get verification from the source and post that. I agree that clear typos should be left alone, as long as the meaning of the sentence is still clear. I have seen some typos/grammar misuses that are a bit more egregious and make it hard to figure out what was meant by the sentence-those I will ask for clarification (but do it politely).

Exactly, and online is a huge 'benefit' for those type of people to hide behind keyboard.

Probably 90+% would never say the same thing in person or use real full name when commenting. I admit it's hard to avoid jumping into flame wars online but it's never worth it!!

Incorrect info- yes. Typos and grammar- no. In this day of auto correct and fat fingers everyone deserves a pass. My pet peave is a wall of text. I just won't read it.

I'm not sure if your typo was intentional or not, but it made me chuckle (only because of the context of this conversation). 🤣 I totally agree that small phone keyboards make it difficult to avoid typos sometimes. I agree that big blocks of text are also a pain.

When I first started participating in discussion boards 20 years ago, people where rabid about jumping on mistakes in grammar or spelling. This actually helped me improve my writing skills since I didn't want to deal with 100's of corrections every time I wrote a message. I still make mistakes, but it is much improved from my high school days.

Not everything is a "fact" though. Redhead says it well...
Thanks for clarifying.

Words definitely have meanings. Using the wrong words can totally change the meaning of the statement whether the poster meant to or not.

IMO, the best thing to do is try to understand WHY someone is correcting you. Could your statement be misconstrued (or was flat out wrong)? Admit it, apologize, and move on. Is someone harping on a typo or grammar mistake? Thank them for pointing it out and move on. If you think you're still correct, sure, say "what I meant to say was... " Sometimes certain words are missed when reading (or typing). Go back and read your post they're replying to and see if it really says what you think it does.

Certain posters seem to enjoy nit-picking or finding fault with others and tend to jump right in to scold them which I find annoying. To me that is an example of being a troll. We are all adults here and no one thinks more highly of someone's opinion when they talk down to others like scolding a small child. The 'ignore' feature works great for people like that. Trolls tend to move to other sites when they stop getting people to engage with them. Have also seen that happen on various other sites where I participate. Many threads are asking for our opinion and often it isn't a matter of fact, but rather they seem to have a different view of something. I have no issue with someone having a different opinion, but they should also respect the right of others to express a view that is different from theirs.

Correcting someone else who stated something factually incorrect can be done politely as mentioned above. Sometimes it is a matter of outdated information and what was true 3 yrs ago at Disney may not be true today. I tend to post links from official Disney sites to help resolve factually incorrect posts with current/accurate information. I do think that the anonymity of being online encourages some people to behave in a way they likely wouldn't in real life.

Jumping in to correct typos/grammar just seems childish to me. Posting on an online forum isn't the same thing as composing a letter where you work.

Auto correct is evil. I can't count how many times a typo was "Auto corrected" to the wrong word.
I'm thinking of a specific DISer, who shall remain nameless… they seem to delight in nit-picking everything I say.
Put the poster on your ignore list. Is the poster retaliating for an old post of yours? If so call a truce
